Question ID: 86054
I have a Windows NT 4 domain with 1 PDC and 3 BDC's. On my PDC the
System Event Log is filling up with Event ID 5711 "The partial
synchronization request from the server "BDC" completed successfully."
On my BDC the System Event Log is filling up with Event ID 5732
"Replication of the SAM user "User$" from the Primary Domain
Controller "PDC" failed with the following error: The specified user
already exists."

Any suggestions on how to resolve? I have synchronized the PDC with
all BDC's.

Greetings sena,

Having worked with Windows NT4 for quite a while (and being an MCSE)
I'm going to try my best to help you find the solution to your
problem(s). First of all, it's quite possible that the two problems
are directly related to each other. We know that they both have to do
with the replication process, but fixing one may directly fix the
other. Then again, it may not. We'll have to wait and see on that one.

The error you are receiving on the PDC (ID 5711) is a well documented
error within Microsoft's Technet knowledgebase. Of course, there's not
just a single root cause of this error, so there's going to be some
troubleshooting involved. I found the best article about this
particluar error here:

Troubleshooting a Large Number of Event ID 5711 Entries Recorded on
the PDC
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q208237

..it has links to several other Event 5711 KB articles within it as
well. Looking at this article:

Event ID 5711 Fills Event Log on Primary Domain Controller
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q161569

...it mentions that this error can cause several errors on the BDC,
specifically error #5731 - which is not #5732, but could be a very
close relative.

Doing a search specifically for error #5732, I didn't find any
articles within the Technet knowledgebase and found very little in the
USENET newsgroups. I may need to try and gather a bit more information
about this error if it persists after correcting the error #5711. (for
example - does it truly list a username where you have USER$, how many
users in your domain, etc).

I also tried searching EventID.net (http://www.eventid.net) which is
usually helpful for finding clues about Microsoft event log errors,
but it didn't mention much and nothing about the syntax of your error
exactly.

I propose that we do this: Review the technet articles above and see
if you can resolve the Event ID 5711 errors on the PDC. See if that
corrects the problem on the BDCs as well -- with any luck it will. If
it doesn't, let me know and I'll look into the case futher and will
also get some more information from you. I'll be happy to help you
troubleshoot this thing through to resolution (if possible). Just ask
for clarificaton should you need further assistance on this question.
Thanks!

Sincerely,
PWizard
