PROBLEM: At some point almost every day (sometimes more often),
Windows XP Professional stops reading keyboard input. However, it
still accepts mouse inputs. I can detect no pattern and no apparent
reason for this bug.
A week ago, I downloaded and installed Windows XP Service Pak 1. I
thought that fized the problem since it did not happen for a few days.
Now, the problem is back again.

QUESTION: Do you know of any fix for this problem?

Thanks,
WEB7

Two researchers asked, "Is it a USB keyboard?" No, it is a standard
Dell Quietkey keyboard. I've had it and the Dell computer over three
years. It has never given a problem during that time while I was
using Windows 98 SE. Only since I installed Windows XP Professional
has it stopped reading the keyboard. The frequency was about once a
day until I downloaded and installed Windows XP Service Pak 1. Since
then (about a week ago), it has stopped responding once or twice. It
requires a reboot to restore communication with the keyboard. What a
nuisance. WEB7

Is Windows XP the only operating system you've had on this computer?
Do you have the Dell model number of the PC or perhaps some
information about the motherboard?

I have a few quick questions for you:

1) What model of Dell computer do you have?

2) Do you have the DellTouch software/drivers installed? If so, what
version?

3) When the lockup occurs, does the problem resolve if you unplug the
keyboard from your computer, count to ten, then plug it back in? (I
understand that this is not a USB keyboard.)

Thanks,

Spot

Q: "Is Windows XP the only operating system you've had on this
computer?"
Clarification: No. I used Windows 98 SE for three years and never had
this probblem. Only since I installed Windows XP Pro have I had the
problem of terminating keyboard input for no apparent reason.

Q: "Do you have the Dell model number of the PC or perhaps some
information about the motherboard?"
Clarification: It is a Dell Dimension XPS T600. The motherboard is
new, having been replaced by Dell this past summer. I don't have any
other info about the motherboard.

Q: "Do you have the DellTouch software/drivers installed? If so, what
version?"
Clarification: As far as I can tell, no.

Q: When the lockup occurs, does the problem resolve if you unplug the
keyboard from your computer, count to ten, then plug it back in? (I
understand that this is not a USB keyboard.)
Clarification: Correct, it is a PS/2 keyboard connection. I tried
unplugging the keyboard and reconnecting once, but nothing happened.
It still would not communicate with the operating system. Maybe I did
not wait long enough. Next time it quits, I'll try that and wait
longer.

It seems to me the problem has to do with Windows XP, since when I
boot to my C: drive, which still has Windows 98 SE as its opoerating
system, I haven't had this problem, although, since installing Windows
XP, I rarely boot to C:.
Thank you. WEB7

Did you try uninstalling and reinstalling the keyboard driver from
your computer?

Under WinXP environment, go to the device manager, find your keyboard,
press delete and confirm removal, restart your computer. WinXP should
be able to auto detect your keyboard after restart.

If in case, it doesn't install after 1 or 2 tries, set your BIOS to
"plug and play OS installed" or something similar to that (since I'm
not familiar with DEll computers), save the changes, restart, and boot
to WinXP.

Did this help?

what kind of keyboard do you have? if it's a USB keyboard, does
unplugging it and re-plugging it fix the problem? if it's not a USB
keyboard, how about trying a USB one instead and seeing if it still
happens? :-)

Assuming that the keyboard is USB, the USB port may be shutting down
for one reason or another. Presumably you either unplug the keyboard
or restart the system and this solves the problem. Sound familiar?

Do you have an icon in the lower right hand corner that looks like a
stop watch? If so you may have accidentally turned on filterkeys. If
this is the case you should be able to fix it by double clicking on
the stop watch and remvoving the check from the "use filter keys"
check box.

web7...
How peculiar! A PS2 keyboard should be plug-and-play
in Windows XP. Next time it fails, try right-clicking
My Computer, click on 'properties' and go to the
Hardware tab and click on the Device Manager button,
and see if there's an indication of a problem under
the 'Keyboard' listing.
