Question ID: 86390
I have a HP Scanjet and an Epson Stylus photo printer. They do not
work together on my Time computer, but will with an extra parallel
port. They worked beautifully on my previous Apricot computer which
was very low spec.
I have tried disabling the parallel port test, but this still does not
work

The BIOS setting for the Parallel Port Mode is ECP + EPP. When I
select ECP alone, the setting below disappears (ECP MOde Use DMA : 3)

I cannot understand the second point. The printer is attached to the
scannern which is attached to the computer.
The printer is off line when the scanner functions

>>The printer is off line when the scanner functions<<

Does that mean the scanner works when your only using one parallel
port (when both scanner and printer are connected to the one port) but
the printer does not?

We know that since the printer will print when directly connected to
the computer and the scanner will scan when directly connected to the
computer that this does not seem to be a software problem (on the
computer.) Instead it appears to be a problem with the connector on
the scanner that connects from the scanner to the printer. Please
check that cable and connection carefully. It may only need a
cleaning/dusting but It might be more than that. So when you moved
them from your old computer to your new one it might have been a loose
connection and all you need to do is tighten it. Try the following:

1. Clean all connections on the printer and scanner.
2. Check the scanner to printer cable and make sure it works and is
not loose/dirty.
3. Make sure the printer has power.
4. Make sure the scanner has power.

If it still does not work after that then I'm at a loss of ideas...

Thank you for your latest reply. I should have said (but I thought as
you were the expert, you would have known) that the conflict (this is
the correct term)
between this particular scanner an this particular printer is well
known. Sharing a parallel port is not a good way of operating. I
once got an answer to ths problem, but it is so long ago that I
cannopt remember it. Thank you for your help. I will carry on now
using the extra parallel port.

Have you tried changing your Printer Port settings in the BIOS to ECP
(Enhanched Communications Port)?

Does the scanner/printer have a pass through where the parallel cable
runs from the computer into the one and from the one into the other?
If so, then are both on (pluged in) and connected when you try this?

Can you elaborate on "do not work"? Do the computer report any error
message, if so what?

Yes! The scanner functions but the printer remains is off line when
connected to the second port on the scanner

A workaround for the pass-through: Turn off the scanner when you want
to use the printer. If the scanner does not have a power switch (some
don't) use a separate power strip and use it's switch. This will work
most of the time with this particular issue. And it is a common one.
As you pointed out, using one parallel port for both is not a good
idea. Your best solution would be to buy a new USB scanner, or
printer. They can be found for $50.00 on up.

What model is your Epson printer or scanner....can you try USB? it is
faster and would more than likely solve your problem. I have
encountered this problem before with Time PC's and the printer/scanner
port sharing, the only solution (apart from USB) is to run a seperate
port....and what is the problem with doing that? the only concern
would be conflicting DMA etc....but as you are using two ports already
there is no need to change...is there? and I agree sharing a paralell
port is undesirable, no matter what system you have.
