Question ID: 87003
We have a client that just got an ADSL line through Telstra’s Big Pond
ADSL (http://www.bigpond.com/broadband) in NSW, Australia. The ISP
set them up with an Alcatel Speedtouch Pro-4 port modem (Model 3EC
18703CC). It is a unit that has a router (NAT) and a 4 port switch.
The docs can be had at : http://www.speedtouchdsl.com/support.htm.

I had them hookup 3 computers to the switch so they can all share the
1 IP number provided by the ISP. I was told the system was PPPOA
(like PPPOE, but over ATM), but AI am not sure. It appears to be
“always-on”, and does not require any computer to login using any kind
of PPPOE login program, like some setups I have seen in the US.

The system works great for people inside the network to getting out
(web surfing), but I need to be able to get back in from the outside
to do Remote Desktop and run programs like Netmeeting and Timbuktu
(works on port 408 TCP).

The internal addressing scheme is a 10.0.1.x scheme. I checked what
the DHCP assigns a client PC and got the following:

A typical IP is 10.0.1.45 (or was it 10.0.0.45???) . The Gateway is
10.0.0.138, the subnet mask is 255.0.0.0, and the DNS is 10.0.0.138.
10.0.0.138 is the IP for the Alcatel unit.

I installed a dynamic dns type ping program (www.no-ip.com), so that
it radio’s back it current IP number to a hostname I can reference.

When I typically do setups like this, I use Linksys router, or a PC
with 2 NICs running Sygate Home Office. That way I can setup a DMZ
host and use port forwarding to be able to Timbuktu or VNC into a
specific PC or Mac from the outside. This is also how I deal with
Netmeeting.

This Alcatel unit that is doing the NAT has no port forwarding or DMZ
function, as far as I can tell from browsing the menu’s that come up
by pointing a browser (on the inside of the network) to 10.0.0.138.

I can’t just dump the Alcatel unit in favor of a PC running Sygate, or
can I?? Doesn’t that Alcatel do something that is needed for the
PPPOA?

Doesn't it convert the DSL cable into an ethernet cable and do related
functions?

If it had a simple, easy to find DMZ, I could at least put such a PC
in the chain after the Alcatel, and have the PC doing the NAT.
Sygate has the port forwarding that I need.

I did find this , http://wpool.com/smoothwall/0.9.9/final/adsl/, does
that mean I can use different hardware?

Help!

Hi sherpaj-ga,

Please let me know if this is what you are looking for. The following
website
explains how to forward different ports into a machine connected to
the ST PRO.

http://www.nzdsl.co.nz/howtos/Alcatel/alcatelpinholing.html

It has examples for instance,

nat create protocol=tcp inside_addr=10.0.0.254 inside_port=80
outside_addr=0 outside_port=80

From my understanding the command above will allow access from outside
through the ST PRO and into the internal machine 10.0.0.254 on port
80.

is the router you mention directly connected to the phone line
providing dsl service? if there is a seperate device providing the
dsl, you should be able to just ditch the router you are using and use
something else. If the router you are using connects directly to the
dsl line as well as performing nat etc., perhaps some other researcher
can come up with a creative solution for you.

compn-ga were awesome. Please post them as the answer. If you could
add one thing, that would be great. What other modems can I buy to
replace the Alcatel Speedtouch Pro-4 port DSL modem in Austrailia.
I'd like something with a router that has DMZ, port forwading, and all
the cool stuff that simple Linksys modems have (and are sooo easy to
config). The ISP is Telstra.
