How can I search Google Groups for posts that reference the newsgroup
alt.fan.tom-servo, but which are not sent to the group

Hello,

Google Groups search is a little tricky, automatically "narrowing" the
search to a specific group whether or not you wish to, but I found a
little run-around that will help. If you type this query into the box,
"alt.fan.tom-servo -group:alt.fan.tom-servo" you will come up with
what you're looking for. It took me a couple minutes to read though
the advanced search options, and although there's no mention of
restricting a search against groups (rather than within groups) I
tried a little boolean luck and it worked. Here's a link to make it
even simpler for you (see bottom of page).
