I work as a internal Telecomm Consultant in the oil industry; we have
a exclusivity contract with a local supplier for the radio
communications (trunked, 800 MHz), but the Gas Plants group need
radios with internal-communications-only for the complexes. Because
it's expensive to use the contractor's radios for this task, we are
looking for alternatives as FRS (a short range, open service) but,
Sine Qua Non condition, must be explosion-proof. I did a research and
found nothing; I want to know if this kind of radios exist and/or
alternatives for this problem.

For explosion-proof I mean that the radio can work in hazardous and/or
potentially hazardous environments, equipped with intrinsically safe
batteries.

Have a look at

http://www.ecom-ex.de/e/intrinsically_safe_products/maintenance/index.htm

they build an ex-proof PMR radio (which is the European type of short
range license free radio service), we use a pair of those radios
within Europe for exact the same purpose as you intend to do it. Maybe
they can also modify am FRS radio accordingly.
