To make sure that we get the right information, do you want to include
all of the following types of equipment:
* digital audio
* video disk
* DVD
* CD/ROM (read-write/write-once)
* optical disk
If you're seeking information on the media (as opposed to equipment)
market, please let us know.
Finally, some shipment/forecast information may be a few years old.
Please let us know if that's a problem.
Best regards,

I am interested in commercial applications for data storage so DA and
Video Disk should not be included. My interest is in the equipment
and to be more specific, jukeboxes and libraries. As long as the age
of the data is mentioned it will be ok.

In rolling up data on drives, I've the following drive
shipments/values:
CD-ROM, including CD-R, CD-RW:
DVD-Video
DVD-ROM
DVD-R, RW
It's largely a census on single-user systems. I sense that you're
really seeking volumes for:
optical juke boxes, drives used in jukeboxes (IBM 3995 class)
magneto-optical systems
systems software

You are correct. My interest is in sizing the population and growth,
or decline, in this technology. I am in the third party service
business and need to size our capture of the existing base and the
potential service $ going forward.

I don't think that I'm going to be able to answer your question with
any level of accuracy but want to point you to a couple of resources
that you might find helpful:
Storage Networking Industry Association, which has lots of
information, including links to industry publications:
http://www.snia.org/home
Strategic Research Corp. has done a report called "Future of
Datacenter Infrastructure," which appears to be ideal for what you're
seeking. It's $500, modest as far as good research goes. There's an
EXCELLENT synopsis of it, including some very interesting user metrics
here:
http://www.sresearch.com/reports/dop98.htm
Google search terms:
"optical jukeboxes" + "market size"
"storage area networks"
