Hi testosterone-ga!

First of all, Google’s search results placement can’t be bought. This
means that no one can pay Google to be listed in the top ten (or any)
rankings. You might be confusing it with “Sponsored Links” which
Google very clearly identifies using a light background color with the
words “Sponsored Link”. These links are well distinguished from the
list of actual search results.

That being said, getting a better ranking (and achieving a top ten
ranking) on Google can be accomplished in several ways. It’s best to
understand Google’s PageRank technology first. PageRank is the name
of the technology Google uses for its search engine. Here’s an
excerpt from Google’s PageRank technology page (
://www.google.com/technology/index.html ):

“PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using
its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page's value.
In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote,
by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at more than the sheer volume
of votes, or links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that
casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves "important"
weigh more heavily and help to make other pages "important."

Important, high-quality sites receive a higher PageRank, which Google
remembers each time it conducts a search. Of course, important pages
mean nothing to you if they don't match your query. So, Google
combines PageRank with sophisticated text-matching techniques to find
pages that are both important and relevant to your search. Google goes
far beyond the number of times a term appears on a page and examines
all aspects of the page's content (and the content of the pages
linking to it) to determine if it's a good match for your query.”

What this means basically, is that if your website is very popular and
linked by other websites that are also popular, your PageRank
increases. When someone searches for something relevant to the
content on your website, your website appears higher in the search
results.

There is currently one known way to check your current Google
PageRank. Download the Google Toolbar ( http://toolbar.google.com/ )
and enable the PageRank option. When you enter your website’s URL in
Internet Explorer, the Google Toolbar will show the PageRank of your
site.

What you shouldn’t do on your website if you want to achieve a better
PageRank:

There are several things you can do and you shouldn’t do. First of
all, don’t use any hidden links on your page (where the color of the
link matches the color of the background). This is a major no-no and
will hurt your search rankings.

Although Google’s PageRank is based on how many sites link to yours,
don’t create what’s commonly known as a “doorway page” (a page with no
content or content that is purely optimized for search engine purposes
with just a forwarding link to yours).

Cloaking is also on Google’s Don’ts list. A cloaked page is where you
design a special page (with optimized content) for search engines like
Google and a different page for your normal human visitors.

What you should do on your website to achieve a better PageRank:

Submit your website to other Google partnered search engines and
directories such as Yahoo! ( http://www.yahoo.com ) and DMOZ (
http://www.dmoz.org ).

Exchange links with other sites that have similar content to yours.
This way, you improve your own PageRank and you help increase theirs
too.

Keep your pages small and spread your content onto multiple pages.
This will improve your ranking especially if other people are linking
to various parts of your website. As Brett Tabke puts it in his
article “26 Steps to 15k a Day”, “You do NOT want an "all star" page
that outperforms the rest of your site. You want 50 pages that produce
1 referral each a day and do NOT want 1 page that produces 50
referrals a day.”
