The study of signs and symbols is known as semiotics.

Oxford English Reference Dictionary
definition of "semiotics"
http://xrefer.com/entry.jsp?xrefid=423178&secid=.-&hh=1

The most famous exponent of semiotics is Umberto Eco, who teaches the
subject at the University of Bologna and has written several
monographs on it. Eco's scholarly pieces make for heavy reading
indeed. The following brief commentary on his work will convey the
flavor of the language used in academic writing on semiotics.

Tony Veale, Dublin City University
Discussion of "Semiotics and the Philosophy of Language"
http://www.compapp.dcu.ie/~tonyv/trinity/eco.html

If you wish to immerse yourself further, I can recommend a long
critical piece that surveys twentieth-century thinking on the role of
signs in human thought and communication. (This is a PDF file that you
can read with the free Acrobat Reader.)

Goran Sonesson: An Essay Concerning Images
www.arthist.lu.se/kultsem/pdf/Groupe_My_review.pdf

For a more plainspoken explanation of semiotics, you may wish to
consult the following hypertext document.

Daniel Chandler: Semiotics for Beginners
http://www.aber.ac.uk/media/Documents/S4B/

For an equally clear but more concise treatment, I suggest you read
this essay.

Elizabeth Faint Doyle: Critical Theory essay on Key Terms in Semiology
http://www.geocities.com/CollegePark/9349/essay.htm

The Doyle piece is shorter than 15 pages, while Chandler's tutorial is
much longer. By reading selected passages from both, however, I am
sure that you will gain a solid understanding of semiotics without
exceeeding your 15-page limit.

It is my understanding that house policy prevents me or any other
researcher from contacting you directly. If you are interested in
collecting a portfolio of material on signs and symbols, I suggest
that you peruse the links I've provided above.

If you need help writing original material, consider using a Web
tutorial such as the following.

If, on the other hand, you would like to commission someone to write a
report on an academic subject of your choosing, a number of companies
will cater to your need.

VergeCreative
writing, editing, and creative services
http://vergecreative.ca/

EssayFetcher
$18.95 a Page For Custom Writing
http://www.essayfetcher.com/

Literra
Custom Writing
http://www.literra.com/?page=02

The last service, Literra, offers a schedule of fees based on the
amount of time you can allow for the work to be done. EssayFetcher has
a fixed fee, but they will rush your order for a surcharge. If you'd
like VergeCreative to handle the work, you will have to negotiate a
contract, but you should expect to pay several hundred dollars for an
essay of 10 to 15 pages.
