The original Volkswagen Beetle (VW Mark 1, 1600i) is still in
production. It is manufactured in the Mexican factories of Volkswagen.
However, there are rumors that procuduction will finally end in 2003
or 2004, depending on demand, since Mexico, where the main share of
classic Beetles is sold, will introduce a new pollution law in 2005
for which the motor can't be adjusted.
The engine currently used, a 1200 motor with 1600 ccm and 58 HP, is
not for sale in retail to customers directly from Volkswagen; however,
the price for such an engine provided by specialized dealers lies
normally between $1300.00 and $1500.00.
The official retail price for a VW 1600i Beetle in Mexico, as sold by
authorized Mexican Volkswagen dealers, is 74,240.00 Mexican Pesos
($7439.03, as of October 23).
