I am interested in receiving a list of the biggest translation
companies in the world with their revenues for 2001 or 2000. Any other
information (geographical breakdown, detailed activities, contact
details, website addresses...) is welcome. I would also like to know
if there is a good online source for further reference information
about the translation market.

Hello Wallerstein,

Thank you for your question.

The translation business is a very fragmented market with no dominant
players weighting more than 1% of the total market turnover.
http://ttk.ehb.be/colloquim/Presentations/pdf/lion.pdf

At the end of 2000, translation and interpretation services will be a
$17 to $20 billion market worldwide, according to Allied Business
Intelligence. There are approximately 3,000 translation firms in the
United States and the top six companies only tap into 2 percent of the
entire market, the researcher says.

The largest global translation companies are:

Bowne Global Solutions
Lionbridge Technologies
Berlitz GlobalNET (acquired by Bowne Global Solutions- Sept. 2002)
SDL International
Systran Software Inc
Trados Corp

Source: Given that I was not able to locate a master list of major
players in the global translation market, I sourced the above
information from the following articles and publications:

An excerpt from a Time Magazine article dated Nov. 26, 2001,
“Translation services are booming because global customers want to buy
in their native language” by Daren Fonda:

“Some of the largest companies in the field--Bowne Global Solutions,
Lionbridge Technologies and Berlitz GlobalNET (a sister company of the
language school)--say they expect a surge in U.S. government contracts
involving Arabic, Dari, Pashtu, Uzbek and other languages useful in
the war against terrorism. But that's a small part of the business.
More broadly, the industry is thriving because American companies are
learning--after years of denial--that to profit in the global economy,
it's critical to speak the customer's native tongue. (..)Lionbridge
boasts a strong reputation in certifying and testing software for
non-English users. Berlitz GlobalNET, based in New York City, is adept
at consumer marketing. SDL International, based outside London, and
Logos, based in Modena, Italy, cater to a wide range of European
clients. In Asia, firms like Tokyo's Toin Corp. and Hong Kong's Real
Idea have established fast-growing enterprises for clients such as
Kyocera and Sony, respectively. (..)“Bowne Global Solutions, with
offices in 20 countries and 1,600 employees worldwide, the combined
company projects revenues of $150 million this year, making it the
industry's top player.”

A press clipping from Small Cap Shares Magazine - October 2000

“There are many competitors in the global translation industry. US
service companies like NASDAQ quoted Lionbridge, Berlitz and others
have a firm market position; However, SDL is marching fast to
establish itself as a leading contender, with offices all over the
world and substantial international credibility. Global turnover in
1999 was £12.9m, derived from: UK 27pc, rest of Europe 16pc, US 55pc,
rest of the world 2pc.”

An SDL Press Release:

“SDL has performed well above expectations in the first half of 2002
with revenues of £28.1 million, an increase of 68% over the
corresponding period in 2001. More importantly, we have returned to
profitability in this period, with positive EBITDA of £1.1 million
(2001 – negative EBITDA £1.0 million) and an operating profit before
goodwill of £0.3 million (2001 – loss £1.5 million). Our growth is
ahead of the sector average, despite the continuing generally
difficult trading conditions in the sector and the US economy that
have persisted since the same time last year. The acquisition of
Alpnet has enhanced the Group’s revenues with five months
contribution, but the underlying SDL revenues also grew by 3% in the
first half. This latter growth has been achieved from the Group’s
strong customer base and by the addition of key blue chip customers
such as Canon and Computer Associates. SDL has continued to control
costs, keeping the business stable, while maintaining measured
investment in technology and the development of software products. The
Group’s net cash resources were £5.0 million as at 30 June 2002.”

Thank you for your answer.
However I am looking for more precise information about companies
themselves. You only give me a few names that are well known. I am
more interested in companies with sales in the 3-30 million dollar
range, especially in Europe.
I am sure it is possible to find this information, maybe through a
trade association.
Please try to find more information. Otherwise, I might not accept to
pay for the answer.
Thank you.

Hello Wallerstein,

I did many hours of in-depth research and I hope the following results
will please you.

According to Asiaweek, the leaders in selling globalization software
are Idiom, GlobalSight, and Uniscape, but the overall market for their
products is still small, and no vendor dominates.

“The software typically costs $80,000 to $500,000 per license,
depending on how many versions of a site you want to create.
Mainstream content management vendors like Vignette have also begun to
add multinational and multilingual capabilities to their products.
Service providers like Bowne Global Solutions, Berlitz GlobalNet, and
Glides offer globalization services on an outsourced or an application
service provider (ASP) model.”

Why are you looking for an overview of the market? I work in the

I am looking to make an acquisition in this sector and would get an
idea of who the main actors are. Actually I would be interested in
those companies with revenues ranging from $ 3 to 10 million, in
Europe or in the US. Any information about the size of the companies,
their focus, their shareholders or their profitability is welcome.
