I am trying to locate photos of the Leonid Meteor Showers as they
appeared on the night of 11/17/01 so that I might give one as a gift
to my son & his fiancee who became engaged on that night at Wingeshire
Beach, Gloucester, MA.

Do you require photos that were taken from Gloucester or would any
photos of the Leonids be adequate?

Clarification of Question by donnamhizny-ga on 23 Oct 2002 13:58 PDT
I would prefer a picture taken in that area, as they were on the beach
watching the meteors. omething that would show pretty much the view
they would have seen would be sufficient.

Hi - many of the photos that were taken during the night of November
17-18 2001 are dated the 18th. as the meteor shower was at its peak
during the early hours of the morning. If you are interested in
pictures from the beginning of the 18th. there are several taken from
the Eastern US and Canada, including some taken only about 100 miles
from Gloucester. These particular ones can be downloaded from the web
without even asking permission for 'private use'. If you want better
quality prints I imagine there's a good chance that that photographer
and/or several others might be willing to make an arrangement with you
- especially for such a romantic purpose! (Their email addresses are
easily available as are small images of their work.)
Please let us know if this is of interest to you.

Just posted my message before seeing your "clarification of question".
I think the viewpoint of some of these pictures would be similar to
the Gloucester viewpoint, as long as you are happy with the time and
other details.

leli-ga Sounds like you can help me. Is there a way I can contact
you for copies of photos you might have?

Hello again

The pictures I'm thinking of are ones I tracked down on the web - I
don't actually have copies. I found various possible photos online,
where you would have a choice, either to:

1--- download pictures and print them out (just a little gift)
or
2--- view small images online and email the photographers to make an
arrangement with them about purchasing their work

The pictures I found were, I think, taken by enthusiastic amateur or
professional astronomers.

Let me know if you'd like an answer consisting of a list of
possibilities. I'd be happy to pick out some suggestions for how to
follow through on the great idea for your son and his fiancee.

leli-ga Yes, I would appreciate any effort and help in finding these
photos and/or photographers. My son, the groom, is himself, a
professional photographer and I've found it ironic that the pictures
he took (or attempted to take) were not quality-wise enough to bother
printing. Guess his mind was elsewhere that special night! Thanks
for your interest and help. Donna H

Hello again, Donna

I've enjoyed researching this for you and do hope these suggestions
will lead to a nice gift for the engaged couple. The best plan is
probably to email some of the photographers whose pictures you like
best to inquire about printing etc. It did also cross my mind to
wonder about creating a collage of smaller pictures. That way you'd
get more actual meteors on show at the same time!

First, some photos taken from Wilbraham, MA. The third one down is
probably the best. You are permitted to use them as they are for
'private use' although the email address is there for further
information. (Click the link at the bottom of the page.)

Then I found a 'Gallery' of Leonid images accompanied by
photographers' email addresses. As you look through you'll see plenty
of possibilities, including:

Pictures from North Grafton, MA - see enlarged version and also click
on 'more' on main page.

From eastern Alabama - click on image to enlarge and numbers 1-3 to
see them all.

On page 4, I like the picture taken from West Virginia.

On page 5, two meteors above Maryland:

My guess is that photos taken from anywhere in North America would
show views like those your son saw from Gloucester. I liked this
picture at the astropix site but it doesn't say where the photographer
was. (Email at bottom of page.)

Nasa has a long list of Leonid photos with clickable links;

By the way, the Leonids will be showering down again early on November
19th this year but that may be the last good show for nearly a
century:

While researching this, I saw comments more than once that
photographing meteors is really hard so if your son couldn't
concentrate on that special night, he must be forgiven!

I hope this helps you but if anything I've written is unclear or any
of the links don't work, please ask for clarification.

Good luck - Leli

This is the search I used. There are certainly more pictures to be
found as it offers 13 pages of results to comb through.

>> 11/17/01 <<

Since astronomers have adopted the ISO 8601 Date Format for their
records ( the YYYY-MM-DD format), you may also find a few more sites
by searching for "Leonids 2001-11-17" and " Leonids 2001-11-18".

Bear in mind that astronomers also record all times in UTC (previously
known as GMT) so a picture stamped as 2001-11-18 04:00 UTC would have
been taken at 2001-11-17 20:00 PST (PST = UTC-0800).
