Hi amzh,

would finding a copy of the book in a library near you satisfy you?
For instance, the New York Public Library has a copy, see the link

http://catnyp.nypl.org/search/astrauch/astrauch/13,70,113,B/frameset&FF=astrauch+dora&1,1

If you like this idea, tell me where you are located and I will try to
help.

dannidin

I am trying to locate a copy of "Satan Came to Eden" either in English
or Spanish for a friend of mine who resides in the Galapagos Islands.
She is a naturalist, has worked with Richard Attenboro and is eager to
pursue her research. Unfortunately, she does not have access to a
local library and asked me to assist her in her search. ANy recent
scientific publications about the Galapagos would also be most
helpful.

The book does indeed seem hard to find.

However, before "Satan Came to Eden" was published as a book, it was
published in serial form in a magazine over the course of three months
in 1936.

Would an answer that contains a few probable sources for those issues
of the magazine be sufficient? (I say "probable" because the sources
must be contacted to find out if they have these issues or are able to
obtain them. I'd be happy to contact them either before or after
posting the answer, if you would like.)

Dear amzh-ga;

“Satan Came to Eden” is Dore Strauch’s 1936 account of murder and
deceit on the island of Floreanna (Santa María) in the Galapagos, as
told to Walter Brockmann. It was first published in 1936 as a serial
article in “Hearst's International Cosmopolitan”. In 1937, the
publishing company, Harper and Brothers, New York and London compiled
the story, reprinted it, and distributed it in the form of a book.

I am posting my research results in the from of a comment because
unfortunately, the book appears to be out of print. The only places I
found that offered the book. Amazon.de and NetStoreUSA, had only the
German version (“Satan kam nach Eden” by Georg Bremer).

There are a number of people on USENET who have this elusive book on
their want lists. Perhaps you can make contact with one of them to see
if they have been successful.

I wish you (or any researcher taking on this task) luck in finding
this book, which is by the way, a remarkable mixture of murder,
conspiracy and adventure. In the meantime, if you merely wish to know
the details of the incident, as told by the various people involved
(and the details do differ depending on whose account you read), I
have provided the following links to get you started.

Best of luck in your continued search;
Tutuzdad-ga

Hi dannidin,

Unfortunately, I am trying to get a copy to send to one of the
naturalists in the Galapagos so the NY Public Library is not the
solution. Thanks for your suggestion.

Hi amzh,

If your friend is a naturalist working on the Galapagos islands,
surely she must be in touch with the Charles Darwin Research Station,
located on Santa Cruz island? To my knowledge it is the only
organization permitted to do research there, and all outside research
is done through them. The CDRS has an extensive library, which would
be THE place to go for any scientific and other information on the
islands. At their website

http://www.darwinfoundation.org/research/fac4.html

you read:

"The Charles Darwin Research Station Library, begun in 1964, has grown
from a few shelves in the education building to an ex
tensive collection of thousands of books, reprints, journals, maps,
aerial photographs, and photographic slides.

Named after Gerard Corley Smith in October 1997 because of his
long-standing involvement with CDF, the library holds the most
complete collection of material on Galapagos anywhere in the world.
The general collection of texts focuses on scientific and ecological
topics.

The library is open to all CDRS personnel and visitors. The library
does not provide inter-library loan services."

They do not have an online book search, so I could not check if they
have the book "Satan Came to Eden", but I imagine it is quite likely
that they do.

Having visited the islands myself, I know how difficult it might be
for your friend to get to Santa Cruz island if she is on one of the
other islands, but if she needs scientific information this is
definitely the place she should go.

If you want I could try and contact the library by email and ask if
they have this book. In any case, I hope this has been helpful to you,

Thanks for the information. My friend is very familiar with the
Darwin Research Center, but unfortunately from what she has told me
the library is practically non existent. She lives in Puerto Aroyo
and is frustrated by her inabilibty to get books and information.
