I am looking for a children's story that my mother remembers from her
childhood. It is called "Grandma Glittens and her Amazing Mittens". It
is part of a collection of stories. The collection may be by
Scholastic, and the book came out in the 40's or 50's I believe. If
you have any information please let me know. Also Please let me know
where aI can find the book. Thanks

Hello.

"Granny Glittens and her Amazing Mittens" is in the "The Golden
Christmas Book" (Simon & Schuster, 1947) by Gertrude Crampton.

Source:
The Washington Post: "Merry Christmas: Celebrating America's Greatest
Holiday":

"The Golden Christmas Book, published in 1947: I must have found my
copy under the tree that very year... The story of old Granny
Glittens, who dyed her yarn with lemon drops and chocolate bars and
candy canes, and made Christmas mittens that you could actually eat!"

A book dealer called Round-About Children's Books currently has a copy
for sale. I called them (Tel 610-647-7987), and spoke to a person
named Nancy. She confirmed that the book is in stock. Just to be sure,
I asked her to read the contents of the book to me over the phone.
"Granny Glittens and Her Amazing Mittens" is indeed in the book. For
more information, visit Abebooks.com:
http://dogbert.abebooks.com/abe/BookDetails?bi=99674718

Other copies are listed for sale on Alibris:
http://www.alibris.com/search/search.cfm?chunk=25&qtit=The%20Golden%20Christmas%20Book&qauth=Crampton%2CGertrude&qsort=p

search strategy: "amazing mittens," "granny glittens"

I hope this helps.

I should have mentioned that some of the copies at Alibris are of a
second edition of the book that came out in 1955. I notice that the
second edition is somewhat shorter. "Granny Glittens" is definitely in
the 1947 edition, so you might want to order that one just to be safe.

Hi.

Nice you to hear from you again on this.

I should note that this answer was written back in October, so some of
the links are outdated.

The article that I cited is no longer on the Washington Post site, but
the same article is on the New York Times web site:
http://partners.nytimes.com/books/first/m/marling-christmas.html

Also, the earlier listing for the 1947 edition of "The Golden
Christmas Book" on Abebooks is outdated. Here is a current listing
from abebooks:

Hello Kipeep,

It has come to my attention that, in addition to being in "The Golden
Christmas Book" (1947), the story "Granny Glittens and Her Amazing
Mittens" is also in "The Tall Book of Christmas" (1954).

The Tall Book of Christmas
Dorothy Hall Smith, editor & Gertrude Elliott Espenscheid,
illustrator.
Harper & Brothers, NY, 1954, hardcover
Available from a dealer listed on Abebooks.com:
