Hi Deekay,
Thanks for asking this interesting question. Fantasy sports leagues
are certainly a huge industry; a study conducted by the Fantasy Sports
Trade Association, in conjunction with Harris Interactive and
Fanball.com estimated that there were 29.6 million fantasy sports
players, with 85% of these involved with online internet leagues.
This sounds like an awful lot of people, but consider this:
(http://www.sandbox.com) alone has over 6.7 million members, and many
fantasy sports players may have a number of team in any number of
sports, and at any number of different websites.
Unfortunately, this report is only available to download from the
website below, with a pricetag of $2500 for non-members of FSTA. The
study was first published in 1999, so its data will probably be
somewhat out of date.

A similar report, The 2000 Fantasy Sports Report, is also available
online, again for a price - $75.

(Please note that this report is also several years old.)
The main findings of an academic study, based on an Indiana University
study in 2000, are published online at
http://www.iuinfo.indiana.edu/ocm/releases/fantasy.htm
The survey respondents were students and executives aged between 25
and 35, engaged in the sports and entertainment industries. The data
indicates 80% of those surveyed take part in at least one fantasy
football league. This report should be available for perusal; contact

A May 2002 issue of the St. Louis Commerce Magazine focuses on some of
the statistics of fantasy sports leagues. It is available in the
Google cache at

This article (http://techway.washtech.com/news/2_8/techcap/9014-1.html)
was written in conjunction with Scott Doniger, an analyst with market
research firm Forrester Research. The company's research estimates
that there are 30 million fantasy sports players in the USA alone.
The information gathered by the authors of the reports detailed above
is very difficult to find published online. Professional market
analyses do not come cheap! I hope what I have found is useful to
you, and please don't hesitate to ask for a clarification if you are
dissatisfied in any way.
Thank you again!
