Question ID: 89487
I want to know about a pediatric medication combination of
ibuprofen/pseudoephedrine which is in research study phase in Atlanta,
Georgia. It is at Northlake Pediatric Associates. It is a
double-blind study on children age 6 though 11 years, to learn about
the two medications used alone or together to treat nocturnal enuresis
(bedwetting). Questions: What is the mechanism of action of the
combination of the two drugs on this issue (nocturnal enuresis). What
are the dosages of the two drugs that will be administered? Is it
based upon body weight? For example, the child is at the 50th
percentile for height/weight, at age 7. What effects do a diagnosis
of ADHD or ADD (and the prescribed CNS stimulant medication of
Adderall)have upon the perception of the effectiveness of the tested
drug combination? What regulatory agency has authorized this study
and where can I review a hyperlink to that authorization. What
anecdotal clinical evidence initiated the study?

I know what the USUAL use and mechanism of action of ibuprofen is, I
know what the USUAL use and mechanism of action of pseudoephedrine is.
I want to know what the COMBINED mechanism of action on the
(bedwetting) issue is.

I already know that a diagnosis of ADHD or ADD can expect a symptom of
nocturnal enuresis.

I have not been able to find the exact study you mention yet, however,
I have some e-mail leads that are awaiting replies. Do you have any
further information about the study (what journal it was mentioned in,
etc.) that might help me track it down?

Without locating the actual study in question, I obviously cannot tell
you the exact doses they are testing with or what regulatory agency
authorized the study. However, I can still provide a detailed review
of the possible mechanism for a combined usage of
ibuprofen/pseudoephedrine in relation to nocturnal enuresis; as well
as the relationship between AHHD/ADD and nocturnal enuresis,
particularly in terms of the serotogenic system and the effects of
ibuprofen/pseudoephedrine on these systems. If the study is
unavailable, would this qualify as an answer?

It was mentioned in a newspaper (the Atlanta Journal Constitution)
advertisement soliciting potential research subjects. The phone
number is 770-498-9355, subject screener is "Karen". I regret that I
neglected to provide that detail! Please accept my apologies. I am
particularly interested in knowing the range of dosages that they are
considering evaluating, the anecdotal clinical evidence that initiated
the study, and the regulatory agency that approved the study, so
PLEASE DO NOT ANSWER if you cannot obtain this information.

I am interested in the other information that you could provide, "a
detailed review of the possible mechanism for a combined usage of
ibuprofen/pseudoephedrine in relation to nocturnal enuresis; as well
as the relationship between AdHD/ADD and nocturnal enuresis,
particularly in terms of the serotogenic system and the effects of
ibuprofen/pseudoephedrine on these systems." ESPECIALLY if you could
also explain possible reasons for failure of DDAVP and imipramine
trials on nocturnal enuresis. (FYI - I would not use your information
to self-diagnose or treat, just in case you were concerned about
that.) I want this information summarized in lay terms, but also
supported by documentation in medical and scientific terminology. I
would be willing to re-post the (reduced) question under these terms
at a slightly reduced list price. Is that fair? Thank you for your
time and interest.
