I need statistics on why businesses do not have websites. Preferably
small to medium businesses. Is should be something along these lines:

40% - Too expensive
26% - Higher priorities
15% - Can't take our offline inventory system online
13% - Internet is for weirdos and will never last
2% - I'm waiting until GA designs websites as well as answer questions
1% - I'm waiting for GA to design websites for $2.00

I need SPECIFIC reasons. I'm doing some market research and I need to
know why a business doesn't have a website.

Recent surveys would be preferred. I would also prefer quotes from
multiple surveys, but it's not totally necessary (tip will be given
for multiple surveys).

Also, please review my last question regarding the percentage of
business without a website. I would like that to be answered if
possible. I raised the price to $15, fyi.

Please ask for clarification if necessary, rating will be given.
Thanks!

Greetings,

Do you want the information to be specific to a certain country, or does
that matter? I found some data for Europe, and some for the US.

Most of the data I have found is dated 2001. Is that recent enough?

Thanks,
bikerman-ga

Good question, should have stated US (I did in my other questoin). If
you've got data from both countries that works for me.

If it's later 2001 it would probably be fine. Use your judgement I
guess. Do you think the survey's still accurate?

Thanks!

Hello, xemion-ga.

I researched your question to the best of my ability, but was
unable to find what I considered to be suitable surveys. I will
give you the information I found in the hopes that it will be
somewhat useful. Perhaps someone else can provide a better
answer.

The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) released a
poll titled "The Use and Value of Web Sites." I was unable to
find a link to the poll from the NFIB homepage, but here is the
URL to it

http://www.nfibonline.com/PDFs/sbpoll/webpoll.pdf

Note: The poll is a PDF document. You will need Adobe's Acrobat
Reader in order to view the document. Acrobat Reader may be
downloaded for free from

http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep.html

I was unable to figure out how many businesses were polled, but
they consider a small business to be one with from 1 to 249
employees. According to the survey, 35% of small businesses have
websites, and 22% of small businesses are on the web but do not
have web sites. Here are the statistics for the the reasons this
22% don't have websites:

56% -- "products and services don't lend themselves to sale on the
Internet"
45% -- otner sees no benifit in having a web site
38% -- "haven't gotten around to it yet"
25% -- don't have time
17% -- don't have the know-how
13% -- "feel the infrastructure is not yet available"
7% -- costs too much, initially
4% -- "too much online competition"

As you can see, these numbers total well over 100%, so there must
be some overlap in the answers. This data was taken from page 11
of the above-mentioned PDF document in the section titled "On the
Web, But without a Site." Note that these are percentages of the
22% that are on the web, but do not have web sites--it doesn't
include those who are not on the web at all.

Search Strategy:

Google search terms:

Several other searches which didn't turn up anything useful.

I intend to post a comment to your other question as well. I'm
sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
