Question ID: 89862
I'm doing some picture research for a show I'm doing and I need some
stupid looking pictures of infamous world leaders.

BLAIR: I have found a Blair p[icture I really like at
http://news.bbc.co.uk/olmedia/695000/images/_695976_sblair.jpg in his
band Ugly Rumours - the BBC don't own it and so I need to know the
names of the pictures libraries or find a medium to high resolution
shot.

OSMANA BIN LADEN: There is a famous shot of him on a school trip to,
I think, Paris - he is at the end of a long row of kids. Again,
ideally a med/high res shot would be best or the name of a pic library
that can help me.

GW BUSH: Any pics of a younger Bush as a hippy/drinking whjatever.
Again, ideally a med/high res shot would be best or the name of a pic
library that has an approriate shot

SADDAM: anything weird would do. Again, ideally a med/high res shot
would be best or the name of a pic library that has an appropriate shot

I think i really need pretty high res shots - medium at a
pinch but I'm not sure that they will work really blown up.

http://www.nohofilm.org/festival/2000/images/big-uncle.jpg This is a
great Saddam shot but very unclear - again high res - better quality
would be a help. It is from a film called Uncle Saddam

Time is of the essence in this enquiry so reward is high - for the moment!

BIN LADEN FAMILY (probably cropped from left)

These is the Bin Laden shots - again they need to be higher res.
Bizarre shot isn't it.

Clarification of Question by piglypie-ga on 25 Oct 2002 21:16 PDT
I would like alternatives Saddam and Bush shots. There are some
similar Blair shots too and they would be great.

I don't know if there are any Osama shots from his university/playboy
days.

Hi piglypie-ga,

I just wanted to clarify your definition of "hi-resolution". Did you
have a certain pixel size in mind? What are you going to be doing with
the images? For example, will you be editing them or zooming them (two
common reasons for wanting hi-res pics).

I have found several great pictures but do not know if they qualify as
hi-res. Also, are you interested in "doctored" images? I found quite a
number of those as well :)

Thanks,
answerguru-ga

Clarification of Question by piglypie-ga on 25 Oct 2002 23:11 PDT
Really what I need is the highest possible file size. A picture
libary will provide picture files of as much as 4/5 Mb. Thes era
etaken form the original trnaparency or print.

The images are to be blown up onto banners for a theatrical set.

I am currently examining ways we might be able to blow up much smaller
using a high grain effect so megafiles may not be neccessary.

No DOCTORED images at all. They must be real pix.

Clarification of Question by piglypie-ga on 25 Oct 2002 23:13 PDT
p.s. obviously a very large number of pixels and size will help - but
the density matters too. If that makes any sense.

Hello piglypie-ga

Very difficult to find high resolution (legal) versions, and my trail
ended at Corbis, a professional photo library.
http://pro.corbis.com (site seems terribly slow though)

Click the righthand 'Enlargement' tab to see better detail of the
photo.
Most have various sizes on offer (depending on image)
Corbis offer if available the following approximate sizes
Low - 425px x 640px File size about 800 KB
Medium - 923px x 1388px File size about 4 MB
High	1537px x 2048px File size about 9 MB
Ultra - 2821px x 4251px File size about 35 MB

There a few good Tony blair ones, and plenty of George W Bush ones
especially the black and white ones... enjoy! Bush has been
particularly active in front of the camera. Bin Laden conversely has
not, who has disappeared of the face of this earth and is a very
camera shy man. The photos circulating of him tend to be the same PR
'approved' ones.
The same can be said of Saddam Hussein, though he makes (slightly)
more appearances. Both the latter two leaders tend to also use
paintings to support their image. A lot of Bin Laden photos tend to be
screen captures from obscure Middle Eastern TV news footage, as
western sources scramble to build some sort of image library of him,
and consequently are not high resolution. The same also applies to
some of Saddam Hussein photos which are also captures.

After searching various photo libraries which did not yield any
productive results, the professional version of Corbis was far and
away the best source, and below are the fruits of the research.
Unfortunately I could not source the higher resolution versions that
you expressed an interest in. However I hope the images below are
suitable in lieu of.

Search Strategy:
Standard webpages only contained low resolution images with copyright
issues for usage, so my strategy was to concentrate on photo libraries
where images are licensable and available at higher resolutions:
celebrity photo OR image library OR bank OR resource

"bin laden" photo OR image library OR bank

The Blair hippy and Osama family pictures are quite well known and I'm
sure must be fairly easily available from libraries.

It would also be good to track down the Uncle Saddam picture which
must also be in libraries as it was in the press kit for a movie.

I love Bush yawning. Any more where he looks really daft?

Hello piglypie-ga

After a second round, below are the results.

Tony Blair:
After much, much searching and ploughing through several photo
resources I found the Blair photo
http://www.rexfeatures.com/cgi-bin/rppshimg0?i=265682M
and came up with various photos of him from that era.

As a graduate
http://www.rexfeatures.com/cgi-bin/rppshimg0?i=271738D

As these are not professional photographs taken with professional
media and equipment (the originals have also deteriorated somewhat
too) so appear less than optimum.

A Smirky Blair is pictured here.

Saddam Hussein:
The largest image I could source of 'Uncle Saddam' was from unaff.org
http://www.unaff.org/2000/F-Uncle.htm - thumbnail
http://www.unaff.org/2000/images/FUncle-big.jpg - larger image, at 505
x 423 pixel size.
This is slightly less than television NTSC resolution of 720 x 480
pixels, the image cropped into a squarer proportion. Video capture
quality suffers as motion video is interlaced and affects the
sharpness of images captured from tape. ( copyright 2000 UNAFF )

The documentary is available to purchase from this site.

I did manage to source a similar image from this photo library

Bin Laden:
This was the toughest, and the family photo seems elusive in high
resolution format.

family has since been taken offline - sourced from
Votervoices.com

In the research a1989 photo of a youngish Bin Laden cropped up

and from Newspix.com.au

If there is any photo library it could be in, maybe it would be the
Associated Press containing more than 50 million images or Reuters,
however I don't have membership of these in a professional photo buyer
capacity, to run a check.

However in the Bin Laden family photo there was no explicit AP or

Another course to pursue is The Sun's content syndication service:

May i suggest you contact them from

Excerpt from the above page

Excerpt below from their "What is Syndication" section
 ( http://www.nisyndication.com/whatfr2.html )
"What do I do if I want to reproduce or copy something?
Well, a good start is to contact us. We will do our best to answer any

also approach us with general requests for certain material - say

research fees may apply if your request is complicated or
time-consuming."
