Question ID: 90266
I am looking for characters / story lines to license for development
in non-US markets. Is there any existing database or source of
characters, storylines, etc. that I could search? I am interested in
characters, etc., appearing in film, TV, books, comic books, graphic
novels, video games, etc.

Greetings! After executing a search with the phrases "characters
available for licensing database" and "storylines available for
licensing database," I have discovered many sites where the creators
of various characters/stories have posted they are interested in
licensing agreements, but I have found no one database where all
available character/storylines are listed.

There are various specific searches that I will be happy to perform
for you to locate interested parties (I have performed some already
and have located information). If specific compilations of this
nature would be of interest to you and acceptable as an answer, please
reply here and I will share the information I have already located and
continue my method of uncovering possibilities for your perusal.

thanks for your response. I am much less interested in the "one-off"
licensing opportunities, but am really looking for one or more
database(s) (probably created by a 3rd party, rather than by a content
owner) even if it only covers a small segment of the market (e.g.,
horror characters in the UK. But it sounds as though you have
uncovered some interesting material, so I will take whatever you have
found, assuming that you want to continiue searching.

thanks again.

Greetings again! In my searches, I discovered Licensing World. It
isn't exactly a database per se but seems to be a treasure trove of
licensing information. It might be a good source for you to
initialize queries.

Licensing World -http://www.licensingworld.com/news/html/industrywatch.html

Their "About" page (http://www.licensingworld.com/html/aboutus.html#about)
reads in part:

"Licensing World is a privately held US based company, located in New
Canaan, Connecticut, with the mission to provide a barrier-free,
global platform for licensing companies, big and small, to participate
and showcase their properties, products and services effectively to
the industry worldwide, in a more flexible and cost-effective way than
traditional trade media

"Aside from some restricted archive and member sections, the site is
totally "open-access". Anyone with a connection to the internet can
use our services, browse our database and read up on developments and
news from within the licensing industry.

"Presently we reach over 60,000 industry professionals who visit our
site monthly, well over half a million page views and a million hits a
month (Mar. 2002 statistics)."

License!, a site located at http://www.licensemag.com/ offers news on
comics characters licensing at
http://www.licensemag.com/licensemag/article/articleList.jsp?categoryId=1560.
This is another semi-database and it is stated on their Media Kit
page:

"License! is the most comprehensive source of information and ideas
for the business of licensed merchandising. License! offers fresh
insights into the creative use of licensing across all product and
property categories. This cross-section fertilization is the essence
of licensing. License! is successfully raising the level of discussion
among licensors, licensees, retailers and other parties across every
industry segment (art & publishing, brands/logos/trademarks,
characters & entertainment, fashion, home décor, online and
interactive, sports)."

A subscription to this service might also be a boon to your choices.

The site http://www.zonalatina.com/Zldata61.htm deals with licensing
opportunities for the Latin American children's market, and Animation
World Magazine offers a great article on a licensing show located at
http://www.awn.com/mag/issue4.04/4.04pages/luriolicensing.php3. The
article
is titled "Learning from Licensing -- What Sells" by Eric Lurio. He
writes "After faithfully attending the show for a decade and a half
(except when I was taking my 'round the world jaunt in '89), I've
learned what it is to look for in an unknown property and what
pitfalls licensees can land in." I found the article very educational
and I think you will enjoy his perspective.

Kim's Licensing offers a character leasing business and they have
quite a few characters they manage. Their website is
http://www.kimslicensing.com/english/business.htm

Creative Licensing Plus is another possibilty for you. On the site,
the July 2002 newsletter mentions Character Licensing stating "Other
licensing companies can offer you the occasional hot property and a
few classics. Only CLP Warner Bros. offers you movies like Harry
Potter, Scooby Doo, Batman v Superman, and Looney Tunes. Only CLP
Warner Bros. offers you their own television channel and characters
Cartoon Network . Only CLP Warner Bros. offers you the wide range of
classics to address every demographic. So don't waste your marketing
budget on one-off hot properties. Let us help you to put together a
marketing strategy that includes a licensing element."

I kept finding various references and links to Licensing World during
my searches, so I believe you should definitely peruse that site.
They seem to have licensing news and information on a great things.

Should you need futher clarification before rating, please request it
and I will be happy to conduct additional research in this area.
