Hi nigel1 The IP address 172.150.6.71 is delegated to America Online, as can be seen by using the common Unix utility 'whois' -- whois 172.150.8.71 OrgName: America Online OrgID: AOL You can see this for yourself using web-based lookup tools -- the one linked below shows that the IP address is associated with the name AC960847.ipt.aol.com -- an AOL dial-up account. http://www.kloth.net/services/nslookup.php?d7n=172.150.8.71&q=ANY What does this mean to you in terms of your question? It means that the only people who can find out which computer it was assigned to at the time it was used to launch an attack against your system are those with direct access to AOL's user logs. As you'd imagine this access is extremely tightly controlled (at every ISP) and I cannot think of any conceivable situation where they would be released to anyone outside of the law enforcement / criminal justice system. If you want to complain about an attack on your system your first step should be to contact AOL's abuse team -- their email address is TOSGeneral@aol.com. Note that you will need to provide them with full and detailed logs of whatever incident occurred. They will *not* be able to take action without thorough logs, as in essence you are asking them to tell one of their customers that they've broken AOL's terms of service -- a legal contract -- and they can obviously not go around making that kind of accusation without full and detailed proof. You should also note that regardless of whether or not they take action, AOL will not be able to inform you about what course of action they have taken as this would breach their customer's privacy. http://postmaster.info.aol.com/index.cfm?article=2&expand=0&sitenum=7 In addition to the above, if an intruder has actually gained access to your computer you may well have a legal case against them. This will obviously depend on where you live but most countries these days have laws making unauthorised access to a computer a crime. If this scenario applies to you then you will need to contact the relevant police department -- and if they believe a crime has been committed they will work in liaison with American Online to track down the individuals concerned. I hope this satisfactorily answers your question. If you have any other questions or concerns, please remember that you can request a clarification before adding a rating to this answer.
