We would like to reupholster a chair in red and make it look edgy and
great. Do you have suggestions for a great reupholster in the Bay Area
that is also a great deal? Thank you!

hi kellyclose,

I've searched yellow pages and come up with a list of upholsterers in
San Francisco. Unfortunately I can't telephone them all and ask their
rates on your behalf - I'm in Australia - but you're the best person
to talk to them anyways: you know what you need, you can show them the
piece that needs to be upholstered, and you know what fabric you're
after. Moreover, you might find that the best upholsterer in San
Francisco lives outside the bay area, so I have included the entire
list below.

Unfortunately, the format of the table used by Yellow Pages means that
I can't copy and paste the whole list - I can only copy one line at a
time! I suspect the list above will be sufficient for you to find an
affordable, good quality upholsterer in your area. In any case, the
rest of the list can be found at:

http://www.yellowpages.com/asp/search/SearchResult.asp?search=upholstery&state=CA&city=san+francisco&zipcode=&areacode=&method=byand&searchcategory=4460&narrowzip=&street=&distance=&firstchar=&buscnt=0%2B0%2B0%2B43&currpagenum=2

This is the page I was up to when I realised it would be more
efficient for you to look at the list yourself than for me to copy all
the entries to this answer.

I searched for 'upholstery' 'san francisco' 'california' in the yellow
pages search page to get these results. I then clicked 'Upholstery
Work' under the Miscellaneous Repair Services heading.

If you need clarification, please don't hesitate to ask.

Best wishes,
shananigans-ga

Hi - Actually, I know the yellow pages exist and you're right, that's
pretty easy to look up on my own! That wasn't what I was looking for
- so sorry not to have been clear. I was really looking for some
actual opinions on these businesses - as noted in my message, the
qualities I care about are basically creative and resourceful. Are
there any "Best of SF" or "epinions" or anything like that that
actually give recommendations on these businesses? Thanks.

Sorry about that kellyclose!

http://www.upholstery-arts.itgo.com/ is the website of Jenifer
Strickland, who does upholstery work in the San Francisco area.
Pictures of her work are posted on the site (quite impressive, I must
say) and she is happy to provide you with a quote upon your enquiry.

Jennifer an be contacted on (telpehone) 415-563-5615
Her business name and address is:
Upholstery Arts and Home Improvement
508 Larkin St. #303 San Francisco CA 94102

The website 'allexperts.com' has a number of upholstery experts listed
- including Mark H. Miller He lists his expertise as follows: "custom
furniture upholsterery. Became journeyman custom upholsterer in 1969.
Certified by Upholsterers Intl. Union. Worked at San Francisco`s most
prestigious upholstering shop as senior upholsterer. Am now president
of Domar Upholstered Furniture Inc. Have upholstered for Presidents
Reagan, Nixon, Clinton and the Queen of England. formerly taught
classes in custom upholstering at the San Francisco Community College.
Happy to answer all your upholstering questions."

I have messaged him through the allexperts service, and when he
returns my email I will post the results here for you. I hope this
will be to your satisfaction.

Please request clarification for this question every few days, so that
I may update you on whether or not I have received a reply from the
'expert' yet. Alternately, please feel free to reject my answer
entirely and allow another researcher to fill my shoes - I will still
post the result of the inquiry for you anyway.

Best Regards,
shananigans-ga

Thanks a lot for the help - I would love to see if you receive any
answers ... if you find anything else along these lines where groups
of people have said "thumbs up" to a certain reupholster, that would
be great. I suspect since Mark Miller has worked for Presidents
previously, his work likely isn't in the 'deal' range I'm seeking, but
you never know ... again thanks for the FAST work.

I have an answer for you!
The actual question I asked is below:

"Hi Mark,

I'm looking to get a chair upholstered and was wondering if you could
recommend to me some reputable tradespeople or businesses in the bay
area? Hopefully, you can provide me with some sort of indication of
how some businesses rate on a cost vs. quality sort of scale? Any
advice you can give will be very useful, I'm sure.

Thankyou so much,
Best Regards,
Shannon"

Here is his response:

"In San Francisco I recommend Sam Segrove of Segrove Upholstering.
Mostly wholesale but will work with resale clients as well. I can not
give you price comparisons, other than that I think Sam will be at the
lower end of the price scale for high quality work.

Next in quality, the very best quality, but at a higher price is
Richard Andronico, of Richard Andronico upholstering. Likewise, mostly
wholesale but will work with retail clients.

I am not familiar with upholstery shops that are considered "low end"
I hope this helps, "

You might want to start with your local Calico Corners store. Go to
www.calicocorners.com to find the location nearest you. They are a
fabric store, and are usually a little high end on prices. I go there
whenever I am doing something like this for ideas and inspirations,
and most importantly, ADVICE! They are a wealth of knowledge and if
you sweet talk one of the salespeople, maybe he or she will recommend
someone local to use. That is what my local store did, and I really
found a great place.

Good luck!
