I have an issue where both netscape and IE die with the following
error: "the procedure entry point _JVM_Supports CX8@0 could not be
located in the dynamic link library jvm.dll". This error occurs when I
click a link on certain websites. It happens consistently, each I I
click the link, shutting down all sessions of my browser. How do I
correct this error? |

Dear julietott,
More than likely, the websites you are trying to view use Java. My
guess is either the Java software that you have on your computer needs
updating or perhaps you don't have it at all. In either case, I would
suggest downloading the newest version, which you can find here:
http://java.sun.com/getjava/download.html
Additionally, you might want to consider updating your browsers (last
week I updated to Netscape 7 and installed Java.Sun 2 at the same
time).
I realize this isn't a "fix", but sometimes it is far easier to delete
the old and download the new rather than trying to figure out what
exactly is wrong and trying to fix it. In the event that another
researcher can give you a better answer, I'll just post this as a
clarification. If you find I've solved your problem, let me know and
I'll post it as an answer.
Good luck,
Sincerely,
hummer

I have netscape 7.0. I've tried removing java and reinstalling it.
Unfortunately the reinstall hangs at the point where it's trying to
install the java virtual machine. Any ideas on how to get a clean
install? I'm on windows XP.

Dear julietot,
Well, sorry to hear you are still having problems but it sounds as
though we are on the right Java track.
I agree that reinstalling a brand new Netscape may be needed, but that
is quite a project. Try this first:
Uninstall your Java and reboot. Do a complete system maintenance -
everything you can think of (clear cache, disk cleanup, defrag - if
you have a registry cleaner such as RegClean, do that too). Reboot
again. Download the newest version of Java but before you install it,
close your firewall (zone alarm) and virus scan programs. Install,
reboot.
Keep your fingers crossed. If that doesn't solve it, you'll probably
need to reinstall Netscape (have you ever been able to get to these
websites after upgrading to Netscape 7?) as rac-ga suggested. It might
be interesting to see if I can view (with Netscape 7) one of the sites
you are having trouble with - if you'd like to post an address, I'll
have a look.

I ininstalled Netscape and reinstalled it in the manner suggested by
rac-ga and this worked. Thank you both for helping.
