Do active military personnel stationed in Norfolk, VA (currently deployed) have to pay automobile sales tax on a purchase of a new automobile? Do they have to pay when they register the vehicle? Where should they purchase in order to avoid the most tax? ( An answer by 8PM EST on 10/27 would be very appreciated.) |

I am not in the military but that would be a question your CO should be able to answer. I don't think you can register your new car in any county but the one you reside in and then you pay the sales tax for that county. It doesn't matter where you buy a car, it matters which county you live in for some states. I think this varies state to state. As far as paying sales tax for the vehicle to the dealer, we all have to pay our taxes, deployed or not. That's a sales tax you pay to the state you buy the car in, not the federal government. Check with your CO. He has your rules and regs and if he doesn't know, ask the car dealer. They would know. |
