Question ID: 90709
I'm running my laptop on a university network based in the UK
(university college london). They've blocked some of the ports,
thereby restricting access to file sharing applications such as
Morpheus and Kazaa. I've taken a look around the web for solutions to
this problem and have come across many HTTP tunnelling applications.
However, I can't seem to get any to work with my setup as I simply
don't know how to use them and have tried to go by the instructions
set out within them to the best of my ability but haven't yet had any
success in connecting with either of the two named file sharing apps.
I'm looking for someone with good networking knowledge who can provide
me with a solution to get around this problem. I will obviously
provide you with any additional information that you require, as long
as I am able to acquire it. Likewise I shall only pay out if the
applications successfully connect with no restrictions, and I am not
looking for any alternative applications that might work (such as
Gnutella LAN client; which doesn't work actually).
Thanks.

Hi,

Could you tell me what program you used. I use HTTP-Tunnel and it
works. I could help you out with the configuration.

Hi,

I tried HTTP tunnel and Sock2HTTP. With no success on both. I've tried
using different port settings within Kazaa but nothing seems to work
either as I don't actually know which ports I can use.

Hi noggywoggy

That might be a good starting point. Can you
scan to see what ports are open for your use?

Do you have access to a computer that is not
blocked by a firewall that you might be able
to establish a routed connection to? A friend's
PC or something?

thanks

I've tried scanning for open ports and inputting the port numbers one
by one into the Kazaa preferences but I still have problems
connecting. When you say access to another PC not blocked by a
firewall, for what purposes would I need one? I do have access to one
at home...

Hi noggywoggy,
Have you tried selecting the option to use port 80 as an alternative
route? Also, try port 25.
Hope that helps,

Yep, tried both... neither seem to work (after letting Kazaa try to
connect for half an hour)

Hi noggywoggy,

the reason I asked about an "external"
computer you have access to, is because
you can route the traffic through that
computer. Basically through any port
you preselect depending how you set it
up. You can think of it as you essentially
becoming your own private ISP. Is your
computer at home at a comparable speed?

I'm afraid the computer at home is only a 56k PC and can't be
indefinitely connected to the net. Additionally, I don't have access
to a private machine that has the ability to do so.

I think the new version of Kazaa allows you to use any port you
choose. I was able to use Kazaa in my school when I couldn't before.

to your question: the server that contants the firewall is the sole
provider for services. if you need a port open then you must contact
the admin of your network to open the service. you cannot open service
from your location unless you have admin privledges to the server.
unless you know the guy or can hack the system, you cannot run your
program.
