It is doubtful that any reliable research has been conducted on "the
DESIRE to spend time on photography."
Survey questions would be worded so that they asked about actual
behavior, e.g.,
"How much time do you spend taking pictures each  week/month?" 
Would this information meet your needs?

Which raises the question are you looking for information on time
spent "taking" photographs or do you wish to include dark room time
for those enthusiasts who develop their own pictures?
