There are several ways to get yourself free adult advertising. Here
are the ones that are the most common, and the most useful at start
up. Unfortunately Google rules forbid me from posting adult urls here,
but if you use the search terms I've given, you'll find plenty of
places that I mention in the answer.
1. Get an ad shown on high-visibility sites via free banner exchanges
2. Put yourself around on news-groups and forums etc with a
"signature" ad for your site in your posts
3. Submit your site to directories of adult sites and search engines
4. Trade links with other adult sites
5. Join adult web-rings
6. Set up a newsletter
1. Get an ad shown on high-visibility sites via free banner exchanges

These work by trading adverts, and for every ad you show for someone
else on the exchange, one of your gets shown somewhere.
There are a huge number of these, and you can see many of them just by
doing a Google search on these terms:
"adult banner" exchange
Some are text only, but most are 468x60 pixel banners like you see all
over the web. I would suggest having a look through these, try some of
them out, and choose the right one for you. I've used a few in the
past myself, and the way I chose them was to go to one of the big
adult sites that you know gets huge amounts of traffic and see what
banner exchanges they are signed up to, then sign up to them myself,
try them out for a month or so and move on to another if my ad showed
signs of flagging.

2 Put a "signature" ad for your site in your posts

You should put yourself around on adult news groups and forums, and
have a small "signature" on all of your posts advertising yourself. (
Most mail and news programs have an "Option" in their menu system that
allows you to add a signature)
This is just a 2-3 line ad for yourself. Keep it small and snappy, and
it will get you traffic. Remember that in discussion groups people
copy previous mails and posts around in huge numbers - you can get
your ad going around a great many people very quickly.

I've been using a signature for a few years now, and found it brings
in a lot of "targetted" traffic is you hang around in the right groups
and forums.
You'll find a huge list of adult forums if you search on "Adult
Forums"
You should put yourself about on as many of these as you feel
comfortable with.
There are numerous adult newsgroups that you can also do this on

3. Submit your site to directories of adult sites and search engines

There are many online directories of adult sites, and you need to get
your name on as many of then as you can
You'll find a lot by searching on the terms:
adult directory xxx
You should get yourself linked in all of these. ( Most of them have a
place on their site that says "add your link" or "add your site" )

4. Trade links with other adult sites

You should maintain a "links" page on your site, and trade links with
other adult sites . This has several benefits
- your customers get access to an "encyclopedia" of links
- your site gets a free ad on the site of the link you've shared with
You should do a search on sites similar to your own, then e-mail them
and ask if they'd like to share links. Most will say yes, because
everybody knows the value of link shares.
Another way to find places that will take links is to seach on adult
sites that ask for your link eg search on things like the following:
- adult xxx "add a link"
- adult xxx "add a url"
- adult xxx "add your link"
- adult xxx "add your url"
- adult xxx "add a site"
- adult xxx "add your site"
You'll find 1000s of them...it's up to you how much time and effort
you put in, but you could end upo with a huge links page, and a huge
number of free ads out on the web. I've used this method extensively
myself, and it really does work.

5. Sign up to adult web rings
Webrings are no more than groups of like-minded web sites linked to
each other, a formalised arrangement like the ones you set up in (4)
above. Again there are many of them.
With these it is best to find just one or two that are appropriate, as
they tend to need you to have largish advertising banners on your
page.

6. Get a newsletter
All of the above will get you traffic, but the best way to grow your
site traffic, and keep the people that visit, is to have a newsletter.
For example, I am a fiction writer, and I have a newsletter where I
tell my subscribers about my books, news about my web site, news about
friends of mine, and I also slip in ads for my books, and tempt them
with competitions and gifts. (Note that I also use the banner
exchanges in (1) to advertise my gifts and competitions - that gets a
lot of traffic to my site).
If I were you I'd sign up for a newsletter at one of the larger adult
sites, just to see what they do, and what they're capable of doing.
To start with all you need to do is have a place on your site asking
for people to sign up (remember to offer them something if they do).
Start small, and send out simple newsletters, and as your customer
base grows, you'll find the newsletter growing with it, and you'll be
able to run ad campaigns through the newsletter to people you "know"
are interested in your product. This kind of targeting has been proved
to be the most effective way of advertising online.

Basically the most important thing you can do early on is get yourself
noticed and put yourself about. All the tips above will help you do
that.
