Hello

There is a great deal of info around. I'll point you at some I found
useful, and give you links to the main directories of Mayan interest.

There is a nice summary of the Mayan timeline here:
"Archaeology of the ancient Mayan civilisation of South America"
( http://www.jaguar-sun.com/timeline.html )

The same main site also has a good introduction to the "Classic" mayan
period here:
"Classic Maya"
( http://www.jaguar-sun.com/mayacities.html )

and here
"Some Thoughts Concerning Collapse of the Classic Maya Civilization"
( http://www.jaguar-sun.com/ideas.html )

Here's what is says about the "collapse" of the Classic Maya
"Between 600 AD and 800 AD, the Classic Maya flourished in the
southern lowlands. Then, for what may prove to be a multitude of
reasons, the great Maya centers of the southern lowlands fell into
ruin – abandoned and left to be reclaimed by the surrounding
rainforest. Many theories have been proposed to explain this
"collapse" including: over-population, extensive warfare, revolt of
the farmer/laborer class, or any number of devastating natural
disasters. "

Specific to the collapse, there is a nice summary here:
"Collapse of the Classic Maya "
( http://lsa.colorado.edu/~depaula/webguide/great35.htm )

And a very good run down of the issues here:
"Understanding The Culture and Collapse of The Maya Civilization
By Joanne Lee"
( http://www.stanford.edu/class/e297c/new/trade_environment/mexico/jlee.htm
)

                           -o0o-

There are several large directories of Mayan links

Google itself maintains a huge list at
"Archaeology/Periods_and_Cultures/Mesoamerican/Maya/"
( http://directory.google.com/Top/Science/Social_Sciences/Archaeology/Periods_and_Cultures/Mesoamerican/Maya/
)

and another at
"History/By_Region/North_America/Ancient_Age/Mayan/"
http://directory.google.com/Top/Society/History/By_Region/North_America/Ancient_Age/Mayan/

                           -o0o-

About archaeology maintains links to all the main sites here:
Maya Archaeology
( http://archaeology.about.com/cs/mayaarchaeology/ )

                           -o0o-

Yahoo has a whole directory on Mayan culture at
( http://dir.yahoo.com/Society_and_Culture/Cultures_and_Groups/Cultures/Mayan/
)
This includes 3 subdirectories on Archaeology, Calendars and
Literature.

                           -o0o-

The Open Directory has a list of 60 links to sites covering Mayan
content here:
"Archaeology: Periods and Cultures: Mesoamerican: Maya"
( http://dmoz.org/Science/Social_Sciences/Archaeology/Periods_and_Cultures/Mesoamerican/Maya/
)

                           -o0o-

Maya-Archaeology is a large site specialising in digital photography
techniques for Mayan artefacts and has many interesting links, with
pictures of original Mayan artwork and even links to sites for
volunteers to work on Mayan exhibits for museums and universities.
Maya-Archaeology.org
( http://maya-archaeology.org/ )

                           -o0o-

My personal favourite is a site with pictures of all the main ruins
here:
"Maya Ruins"
( http://mayaruins.com/ )

Hope that is enough to get you going :)

One of the best online resources for Mesoamerican Archaeology is the
FAMSI ( Foundation for the Advancement of Mesoamerican Studies, Inc.
)site. There is a bibliography and several large, searchable image
archives including the Maya Vase Database. The link is
