I have found the photo albums of Elizabeth Maynard Winslow, a relative
of the Admiral Winslow who sank the Confederate ship Alabama. She
lived on 8 Kearsage Ave. Bosdton Ma. in 1898. What is her relationship
to Admiral Winslow? How can I learn more about her life? I think she
died in Boston between 1924-1927. Her photos taken during the last
mission of the USS Adams in 1898 may have historical significance.

Dear syd63,

I performed a Google search using the following search terms:

"elizabeth maynard" winslow admiral:

This brought me a single result, a document about the launch and
christening of the battleship USS Kearsage on 24 March 1898:

Daily Press, Special Launching Report
http://www.dcr.net/~ussky/usskyhis.pdf

It says, among other things, the following:

"Mrs. Herbert Winslow (...) is the wife of Lieutenant Commander
Herbert Winslow, the only surviving son of Admiral Winslow, who
commanded the old Kearsage when she met and sank the Alabama, June 19,
1864, off Cherbourg, France.
Miss Elizabeth Maynard was born in Washington, the daughter of
Lafayette and Mary who were married in San Francisco, her father's
home at the time. Her father was born in Richmond. (...)
Lieutenant Maynard married the beautiful Miss Mary Ellen Green, the
daughter of Gen. Duff Green. Lieutenant and Mrs. Maynard resided in
Washington for some time and then changed their residence to San
Francisco. It was in the western metropolis that their beautiful and
accomplished daughter, Elizabeth, became the wife of Lieutenant
Commander Herbert Winslow.
Lieutenant and Mrs. Winslow later went to China, where the former was
attached to the United States steamship Yorktown, on the Asiatic
station. They have only recently returned from the Orient and now
reside in Boston. Mrs. Winslow created not a little interest some
weeks ago by positively declining to christen the battleship Kearsarge
with water.(...)"

This means, Elizabeth Maynard Winslow was the daughter-in-law of
Admiral John Ancrum Winslow (1811-1873).

Knowing this, I did additional research utilizing the genealogy
database provided by the Church of Jesus Christ:

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp

My first attempts were unsuccessful, but then I used "Herbert Winslow"
as search term and finally found him in several data entries. This is,
in summarized form, what I learned:

Herbert Winslow
Birth: About 1838; Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts
Parents:
  Father: John Ancrum Winslow
  Mother: Catherine Amelia Winslow
Marriages:
  Spouse: Lizzie Maynard
Marriage: 26 JUN 1876; Of, Washington, District Of Columbia

Lizzie Maynard
Birth: 10 DEC 1854; Of, Washington, District Of Columbia
Parents:
  Father: Lafayette Maynard
  Mother: Mary Eleanor Green

Since "Lizzie" is a short form of "Elizabeth" and all other data
corresponds with what I knew from the ship launch report, there is no
doubt that these are the Herbert Winslow and Elizabeth Maynard Winslow
you are searching for.

Unfortunately, I did not find any further references to Elizabeth
Maynard Winslow's life, not even the date of her or her husband's
death. But I hope that what I found out provides you a good base for
further research.

I am very pleased with the answer. How can I find out if there were
children, and if decendents of the winslows are around today? They
seem to be a naval family. Could more information be found in naval
records?

Dear syd63,

For obtaining further information, I suggest contacting the office in
Boston, Massachusetts, holding the vital records of the city. They
should be able to provide copies of all relevant documents concerning
the Winslow family, such as births, deaths, marriages etc:

You will find useful additional information on how to research
Massachusetts genealogy records on these websites:

As for finding living descendants, there is little chance since those
records would refer to individuals and contain private information;
they might not be published yet.

For information about Herbert Winslow from military records, you will
need to contact the National Archives or the National Personnel
Records Center:

I hope this will help you in your future research!
