How do I find a publisher who can furnish me with a "generic"
newsletter dealing with alcoholism and drug abuse issues to which I
can add a masthead and story on my client's outpatient treatment facilities?

Are you looking for an electronic newsletter or a hard copy? Also,
what audience should the newsletter be directed towards, health care
professionals or those seeking treatment?

Clarification of Question by soberdick-ga on 29 Oct 2002 11:30 PST
My newsletter will be primarily addressed to people who refer
clients/patients to us for treatment of chemical dedendency.
A secondary audience will be CEO's and HR people looking for education
on the subject of drug abuse. Only rarely will perons in need
of treatment seek it on their own. Typical topics might be the
emergence of new drugs of abuse, treatment breakthroughs,
new demographics of abusers, etc. I want to make our intial foray
into this arena in the form of a hard copy, possibly full colore
format. I am not ruling out an email version eventually. thanks for
your excellent questions Richard Cowden

Would a list of newsletter publishers who provide this kind of
services meet your needs?

Yes, a list of newsletter publishers would meet my needs, as long as
they publish newsletters that can be edited to meet
needs of my clients...in other words provide a matrix and some
generalized drug and alcohol content. Thanks. Richard Cowden

Hi,

The best resource that I can recommend is "NIDA NOTES is a publication
of the U.S. Government produced by the National Institute on Drug
Abuse... Except for material specifically identified as copyrighted,
all materials appearing in NIDA NOTES are in the public domain and may
be reproduced without permission. Citation of the source is
appreciated."

The subscription is free and the articles can be used in your own
newsletter template.

Customizable Theme Newsletters
http://www.101newsletteranswers.com/bymail/customnl.htm
provide free templates and access to copy. The articles are not geared
to substance abuse.

http://publishing.about.com/cs/newsletters/
provides links to services for producing your in-house newsletter.

http://www.stocklayoutsfullservice.com/products/pricing.asp
will customize and print a newsletter with your copy. For 1000 the
price would be $1392.

Some excellent advice on newsletter production - geared to law firms,
but applicable to any field.

These articles discusses using "canned" content... some food for
thought.

The reason it may be difficult to locate a "generic" newsletter format
is that the product doesn't deliver high quality content. You'd do
better to utilize the available content from third party providers and
set up a desktop publishing program where you insert the relevant
articles.

Although not specifically newsletter oriented, I thought you might
find this a useful resource... The National Clearinghouse for Alcohol
and Drug Information provides free materials for distribution.
Booklets and articles on specific drugs and counseling information can
be accessed here. Many are available in Spanish.

reprintable information.

Richard,

This turned out to be a more frustrating search than I expected and I
wasn’t able to come up with a publisher or syndicator who has
ready-made newsletters that your can edit and customize. In the
process of searching, I found some additional resources that you might
find helpful.

I, too, found the http://www.101newsletteranswers.com/index.htm site
and it helped me get the language for trying to locate what you’re
looking for. The links for Content were especially helpful.
Sourcing Content On The Internet (4 ) gives you a good review of
Content Providers. These can be classified into Individual Suppliers,
Co-operatives, Press Release Services and Syndication Services.
Syndication Services seemed the best bet for what you’re looking for.

This article from a law firm provides a good discussion how third
party content may be useful for marketing purposes for professional
organizations. He discusses law firms but I think the strategies might
apply well to promoting your client’s outpatient facilities.
http://www.heels.com/nbn-syndication.html
Content Syndication Catches On
Legal websites can provide unique experiences to their visitors while
including third-party content.

Next I looked for newsletter syndicators and custom publishing
resources. I found some sites that might be worth exploring.

http://www.magazine.org/custompublishing/member_directory.html
Custom Publishing Council
The member list includes a profile of for each which includes
capabilities, contact information and links to the Web page. Each of
these members might meet your need for providing customizable content
for your newsletter.

http://www.newsletteraccess.com/pubcorner.html
Publisher’s Corner – Resources for Newsletter Publishers
This site provides a searchable list of 6700+ newsletters. For
example, searching on “alcohol” provided a list of 11 newsletters. I
don’t know if any of these might be available for your use, but they
would definitely help you evaluate your competition.

http://www.newsletters.org/index.cfm
Newsletter and Electronic Publishers Association
This is an international trade association dedicated to serving the
interests of for-profit, subscription newsletter publishers. Their
site provides lots of resources that you might find helpful.

http://www.mediafinder.com/
Media Finder from Oxbridge Communications Inc.
This organization provides databases for online search services, print
directories and CD-Rom directories for all types of print media. If
searching the Web doesn’t yield the results you need, they might be
worth a try.

http://www.dcpubs.com/prod_2.htm
Diablo Custom Publishing
In browsing the various resources listed above, I found this
particular publisher’s site interesting. They don’t provide the kind
of canned newsletter content you’re looking for but I thought some of
their work would fit your needs precisely. Take a look at their work
for several health care providers.

I’m sorry I wasn’t able to find you exactly what you wanted but you
might as well have the results of the research that frustrated me with
its dead ends.

Good luck.
