There is a slide show on "How the Internet Runs!" at

It includes a lot on NAPs, their history and function, though it may
not satisfy your desire for a detailed account.  Searching on
"Internet NAP or NAPs" will probably provide you with lots of sites,
perhaps too many.  Adding other search terms, such as "economics" may
find you more targeted information.
