Hello atavismblue,
Thank you for your intesting question, which gave me much more insight into
the famous actor Lawrence Fishburne. He's multi-talented and his
biography shows an interest in the arts starting with his stage debut
at the tender age of 10!
Here are two interesting links for Lawrence Fishburne's Biography

In addition he was named a US National Ambassador for UNICEF when he
decided to lend his name, time, and energy to the United Nations
Children's Fund, and was subsequently named a US Ambassador.
"On June 17, 1996, the actor was named a U.S. Fund for UNICEF National
Ambassador during a ceremony held in New York City to commemorate the
Day of the African Child, celebrated annually in honor of the
schoolchildren who were massacred in Soweto, South Africa, in 1976.

As for him actually writing poetry, the answer appears to be no, but
he has written, directed, and starred in the one-act sell out play
"Riff Raff".
"TAKES STAGE ROLES
But not content with film and television, Fishburne expanded his
acting credits to include the stage when his own play, Riff Raff,
appeared at the Off-Broadway Circle Repertory Theater. Fishburne wrote
the script about two half-brothers hiding from the law in a friend's
apartment in just eight days while filming Just Cause, and earned
praise for its sharp dialogue and compelling story. In an enthusiastic
review, New York Times critic Ben Brantley wrote "It is a relief to
learn that Mr. Fishburne doesn't need a big screen or someone else's
script to tell a story compellingly." Fishburne also directed and
starred in the production. In 1999, he returned to the stage when he
starred in the play The Lion in Winter at the Roundabout Theater
Company in New York City.

I am going to go out on a limb and say you probably heard the words
"poet and Lawrence Fishburne" in reference to Christopher Stackhouse
who appeared in the third production of Mr. Fishburne's one act play
at the Nuyorican Poet's Cafe.
