Hello and thank you for your question:
I am assuming that your operating system is 'Windows ME' and it is
working OK for you, except that the printer driver that you need is
not appearing in the 'printers' list when you open 'my computer.'
The comment given below is the proper starting point--following that
link will lead you to
http://www.hp.com/cgi-bin/cposupport/swdl.pl?c=dj1199&i=dj1199en&p=hpdeskjet934009&n=hp+deskjet+940c+printer
Please proceed in this order (I suggest you print out these
instructions--I have modified them slightly from what appears on that
page:
---------------
Unplug the printer cable (USB or Parallel)
Create a new folder on the hard drive: c:\dj940 before downloading the
printer driver.
Click on the 'download now' button on that page and save the file to
the newly created c:\dj940 folder [it's a 16.5 megabyte file, so
downloading may take about half an hour if you're using a dialup
connection].
Open the c:\dj940 folder and double-click the downloaded "exe" file.
Dialog boxes indicating "Loading Files" and "Please Wait" will appear
indicating files are being copied. Wait until the files are finished
copying.
Click "Install Printer Software" at installer screen Note: If this
screen is not present, check the taskbar for a minimized screen named
"940c". Click on this item to activate this screen.
A dialog box indicating "Please Wait" will appear indicating files are
being copied. Wait until the files are finished copying.
Click "Yes" and follow the instructions on the installer screen.
After the printer has finished installing the "hp deskjet 940c series
" printer should appear in the "printers" list on the 'my computer'
screen.

In my answer, I suggested that you print out my instructions. Of
course this assumes that you have a working printer, other than the
one that you're trying to install. If you don't have a working
printer, you can refer somebody who does have a working printer to
this answer, namely

and ask them to print it for you.

I did something really stupid. I mean STUPID! I wanted to run my Works
Suite and insted I used my System Restoration Kit,so I lost a lot of
things. My hp deskjet 940c was working just fine, but since then I have
lost it. I need to reconnect this so I can print.
I talked to HP,Adelphia,Gateway and Microsoft and they got me more
confused then ever.
I do have a cd for the deskjet940c,although it is not listed as a
choice on my windows me.
I realize that I will have to write your reply longhand. If you
require more information from me contact me at

Thanking you in advance, Hal Porter

Hello again.
I'm sorry you lost all that material from your computer--as you
realize, the system restoration sets it back to the way it was when
you bought it.
The deskjet cd that you have should work fine. I'm assuming that the
restored system does include access to the cd--that is, that if you
put the cd in the drive it either starts automatically, or you can
find the cd drive on 'my computer' and double click on the .exe
program that's listed on the cd.
So if that works, just double click on the .exe program on the cd and
do what it says.
If that doesn't work then you should follow the instructions in my
original answer, in effect downloading the big .exe file to a place on
the 'c' drive where you can find it when you look for it, then finding
it via 'my compter' and double clicking to run it.
Good luck!
