Hello naram-ga,

According to Apple’s Web page:
http://www.apple.com.au/education/k12/ade/
An Apple Distinguished Educator (ADE) is an individual from Pre-K
through Post Graduate School and is established in their respective
field as an outstanding pioneer. The competitive ADE program
recognizes over 240 exceptional educators throughout the world and
currently 11 in Australia. It aims to promote excellence in education
through technology. As mentors, ADE’s teach, demonstrate, and share
their expertise and enthusiasm with others.

Do you know someone who is interested in applying to the Apple
Distinguished Educator program? The following resources should give
you a good idea of what it takes to be selected.

Look over this page to get learn about the program overview,
objectives, description, benefits and responsibilities and stories
about current participants.

To be considered as an Australian Apple Distinguished Educator (ADE)
2002.
You can review the online application form for year 2002 Australian
ADE program. The form asks for standard background information, work
history, awards and publications as well as several essay questions on
why you want to participate in the program and how you would use Apple
technologies with your students. The same application is used
worldwide.

Jerome_Burg, a program participant stated in an interview: “There is
an application process that requires a rather lengthy investigation
into my technology expertise, pedagogical beliefs, and forward
thinking sorts of experiences with technology.”

On the Apple home page type Apple Distinguished Educator in the search
box and you will get a list of close to 100 links to explore the
program and the accomplishments of those who have participated in it.
Reviewing these should give you a good idea of the kinds of
qualifications past ADEs brought to the program as well as their
achievements during their two year tenure.

Good luck.

Thank you all for your assistance. I am specifically looking for the
"steps required to become" and ADE. The application for the
Australian ADE program shows the step for those in Australia, if it's
the same for the US, the the question is answered. If it's not, I
still don't know how to "apply" in the US.

Thanks

Hi naram-ga,
Here's an update for you. I talked with an Apple account executive and
she promised to get back to me by tomorrow at the latest with the
information about the exact application process and the next round's
deadline. She wasn't sure, but she thought that your school has to
nominate you for the program. I've also sent e-mail to several ADE
alums whose addresses I found on the Web to ask them if they could
give me the information. Stand by for further developments.

I just got this message about the program from a Class of 2000 ADE.

"Actually, an ADE doesn't really "apply." He/she is NOMINATED by a
badged Apple employee in the region where the educator lives. The
Apple employee will have recognized that this particular educator has
made significant contributions to the field of learning and
teaching...and will, most likely, fulfill the parameters of the ADE
program.

Then, the individual educator is contacted by Apple, given a set of
forms to complete (quite extensive), go through an evaluation process,
and, if selected, then invited to participate for a certain length of
time. Each ADE is then re-evaluated periodically to see if he/she
"has what it takes" to continue as a member of this austere worldwide
group."

It sounds like you should either find an Apple employee who would be
interested in nominating you. It might also help to identify ADEs in
your region and talk to them about how to come to the attention of
Apple employees. Your school might be able to help you as well.

Good luck.

naram,
I just got an e-mail from the Apple account rep telling me that she
hasn't been able to get any more information yet and will try to send
me the answer to your question early next week. More later.

naram,

Here's the official answer from Apple. The ADE program is in the
process of being "revamped" and that's why some of the pages referring
to it have been pulled from the Apple Web site. The revised program
should be announced in about a month. Good luck on continuing your
quest.

P.S. I'd like to give kudos to Apple's customer support staff. Once I
got beyond the voicemail promts and got a real person on the line
everyone was very helpful in the call centers and especially the
account executive who tracked down the information and kept me posted
along the way.

Greetings naram,

If you live in Australia you can fill out an application here:

http://www.apple.com.au/education/k12/ade/k12application.html

Otherwise, Jerome Burg explains in the below transcript:

http://www.worldwithoutborders.com/archives/jeromeburg011001.shtml

"..There is an application process that requires a rather lengthy
investigation into my technology expertise, pedagogical beliefs, and
forward thinking sorts of experiences with technology."

Hope this helps,
Hrothgar
