Hello mcp1531:

After thorough searching, the only suppliers of SSX500A replacement
speakers I was able to find were in the United States. Currently,
there seems to be no UK/European suppliers.

However, I was able to find the following three U.S. companies that
sell those speakers and also say they ship worldwide. I have listed
them in order of what I believe are "safety" - that is, how reliable
they appear to be.

Because most of their business is in the U.S., they sometimes have
different regulations/rules for "overseas" orders and shipping. I will
summarize as much of these details as possible.

I'm unfortunatly so far not successful to order the speakers from the
States. Either the companies want local (US) credity cards or they
still could not clarify if the speakers match PFM-500A2WE. The "E" at
the end stands for Europe and is build for 220-240 Voltage whereas the
model number in the States is PFM-500A2WU. "U"for Unites States and
100-120 Voltes!!
This means the compatibility question is still pending!!!

Hi mcp1531:

I am very sorry that you've been unable to purchase the speakers you
want so far. How annoying that the U.S. companies insist on a U.S.
creadit card.

As well, I was (unfortunately) unaware of the "Europe vs. U.S."
voltage and model number issues. :-(

However, armed with this new information, I have been able to find two
European sites that seem to carry the speakers (separately) for the
PFM-500A2WE model. (Since one of them is in a language I do not speak,
please forgive if I've misinterpreted any of their information.)

The situation is finally as follow: The 2 European sides did not
resulted in anything and the UK side will be discontinued soon.Ref the
Addresses you gave me in the States. I was able to sort out the credit
card problem but finally none of the companies has a) stock of the
speakers and b) is able to get the speakers! If this is really true
your information was finally not helpful at all. Can you please double
check your sources? Thanks

Hi mcp1531:

Looks like finding speakers for sale directly on the internet is
proving futile.

I have sent emails to over a dozen London Sony dealers asking them
about the speakers and whether they have them (or can get them) in
stock. I've also asked about pricing.

I'll get back to you with an update as soon as I start hearing things.

Hi mcp1531:

Time for an update.

Unfortunately, none of the Sony dealers that I emailed said they could
help me with your speakers.

Having given up on that avenue, I emailed www.sony.uk directly and
asked them about the product. They sent we over to www.sonybiz.uk, who
just responded to me with:

****************
Regarding your query on the speakers for the PFM-500. Please find
attached
the service manual - which under section Exploded views shows all the
pieces
of the speakers you can buy.

To get a quote for how much this will cost you would need to go to a
spares
dealer and I have attached a list of these for you also.

If you have any further queries please give me a call on the number
below,

I have posted the files they sent me so you can download them at:

Would you like to contact these spares dealers yourself, or would you
like me to try. If you'd like me to try, I will have to email them (as
I am in North America) and that could take some more time.

Please let me know. I hope this works out - we are running out of
options.

Hi
I called 80% of the dealers up today. The constant answer is: NO stock
or they put me back to the normal dealers which are of no help since
the product is "discontinued"

Any other idea?

Sigh. Thanks for making the "local" calls for me. :-)

I have a couple of other ideas. I'll give them more thought this
weekend and try them out Monday.

Thanks again for your patience.

Hi mcp1531:

Well, my last couple of ideas turned out to be dead ends.

I thought maybe we could find a set of speakers in the "used
electronics" market. I went through every UK-based used electronics
site I could find, as well as the international versions of the
"ebay/yahoo-like" auction sites that I could find. The closest thing I
could find was a set of speakers for the PFM-500A2WU model (for about
US$800).

I must admit that I'm stumped here. I have one more thing I'd like to
try - but I'm not holding my breath.

Sorry about all this.

Hello mcp1531:

Well, I exhausted my last chance hope.... :-(

I went to the rest of our Researcher community to ask for their help,
but no-one was able to come up with much to help me.

One suggestion that was put forth was that you could try hooking up
another pair of speakers to the audio output of your plasma screen.
While this will not be the most seamlessly attractive option for your
system, it might allow yo to use the screen (with sound) at the very
least.

I am very sorry that my searching has not been of greater help to you.
Please feel free to rate this answer accordingly.

Yours,

Seems to me you should rate Sony and their distributors at a '1 star',
not the researcher or answer. As far as effort exerted to answer a
question, it seems to me that a lot was put forth.

That amount of research deserved at least a 4 star rating. It seemed
with the amount of research done here that there were no other
alternatives. Websearcher even sent out what seems to be a
considerable amount of correspondence with various third parties and
was unable to come up with an answer. It seems she answered your
question with the only answer possible, there is no source for your
speakers!
