Obesity occurs when energy input exceeds energy output. When we
consume more calories than we burn, we gain weight. Many studies have
shown that obese children don’t necessarily eat more than their
thinner counterparts, but they do lead a more sedentary lifestyle.
There are actually several non-thyroid causes of obesity in children.
Some hormonal causes are, hypercortisolism, hyperinsulemia, and
pseudohypoparathyroidism. Some genetic causes are Cohen’s Syndrome,
Turner’s Syndrome, Prader-Willi syndrome (See below for a link) and
Weaver’s syndrome.
Perhaps Cushing's syndrome (Hypercortisolism) is the disease you have
in mind. “Cushing’s is another frequently suspected cause of
endogenous obesity. Although it is usually iatrogenic in nature, it
can also be secondary to adrenal tumors or primary pituitary
overproduction of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH).”

Perhaps this MAY be the rare disease you read about:
Froelich's Syndrome is a rare endocrine disorder that exhibits
obesity. Froelich’s also goes by the following synonyms:
Adiposogenital Dystrophy, Babinski-Froelich Syndrome, Dystrophia
Adiposogenitalis, Frolich's Syndrome, Hypothalamic
Infantilism-Obesity, and Launois-Cleret Syndrome.
