Dear snailclown,
The artist's full name is Hans Adolf Bühler. He was born in 1877 in
Steinen, Württemberg, Germany. A scholar of the famous German country
scenes painter Hans Thoma (1839-1924), he became a member of th
Künstlerbund Karlsruhe (Artist Community Karlsruhe) and participated
in the Künstlerbund's exhibitions, such as the one in Bremen, 1909.
In 1910/1911, Bühler created the Prometheus mural painting for the
newly erected Prometheus Hall, a part of the auditorium of prestigious
Freiburg University.
Hans Adolf Bühler bought Sponeck Castle near the Rhine in 1917 as a
residence and arranged also exhibitions of his works there.
After World War I, Bühler was appointed Director Of The School Of Fine
Arts in Karlsruhe. While in this position, he wrote several books on
art theory, among them "Die Farbenwelt" (= "The World of Colours",
1930), "Das innere Gesetz der Farbe" (= "The internal Law of Colour",
1930), "Hermann Eris" (about an artist, 1931).
In 1931/1932, Professor Bühler delivers the design for a mural
painting "Die Einführung der Reformation in Dossenheim" (=
"Introduction of Reformation in Dossenheim") for the entrance hall of
the Lutheran church in Dossenheim, Germany. You can see the picture

Bühler, very nationalist in his views, had sympathy for the National
Socialists. Very quickly after Hitler and his party came to power in
Germany, Bühler presented an an exhibition caricaturing the art
sponsored by the previous democratic Government: "Regierungskunst
1918-1933" (= "Official Art 1918-1933" in April, 1933.
In the years following, he was publisher of the "Kunstzeitschrift", an
art magazine promoting the Nazi ideology concerning the arts. Also,
belonging to the kind of artists appreciated by the National Socialist
gouvernment, he spoke very much in favour of the so-called "völkische"
(= national, "Aryan", German) art, like in this example:
"The summit in Germany's artistic life has always been reached in
periods during which the deep longing of the Folk found its artistic
expression in the early period, in the songs of heroes and gods; in
the Middle Ages, in the building of our cathedrals; and then in the
music and the poetry, the German spirit rose like a giant flame once
more during the last one hundred and fifty years in all fields, to be
almost completely extinguished at the turn of this century ..... since
then the officially recognised art has become a matter of playing with
empty forms, or representing a distorted world populated by
miscarriages and cretins. The art propagated by academies and museums
existed arrogantly above the head of the lay people, who did not
understand it. It was for a select few -- the art intellectual and the
art market. Art had no value, only a price. It was no longer the
friendly Goddesses Healing and Blessing: it was only a whore." (Prof.
Hans Adolf Bühler, 1934; source see below)
Bühler had exhibitions during wartime, in 1940, 1942 and 1943. He died
in 1951 in his residence, Sponeck Castle.
It is not easy to say something about the value of his works today
since his graphics and pictures do not show up in auctions and
galleries very often. However, in April 2002 four etchings were for
sale in an auction by Auktionshaus Karlheinz Kaupp, Staufen, Germany.
The four works, "Song of the Nightingale", "Ocean Surf with Woman,
standing on a Rock", "Rainbow over River Landscape" and "Sleeping
Couple" were offered for 200.00 Euro (ca. $200.00).
