Approximately the summer of 1963, there was a news story about a
millionaire's very expensive yacht in the South Pacific or someplace.
According to the story, the yacht had struck a reef or something and
there was a big hole in the side and it started to sink. The people
on board abandoned the yacht and escaped safely in the lifeboats and
were rescued. --It then turned out that, with the people and the
lifeboats gone, the boat rode higher in the water, the hole was above
the water line, and the yacht stopped sinking. Under international
maritime law, the yacht became a "vessel abandoned on the high seas"
and belonged to the first person to reach the ship and claim it.
There were several international groups that were trying to get out to
the yacht and claim it. --What ever happened to the yacht? And any
further details would be welcome.

This sounds a bit like Nicholas Monsarrat's The Nylon Pirates - written in 1960.
