I was with my mother once, at Longwood Gardens which has a
conservatory, and she pointed out a plant to me whose blooms smelled
like being inside a bakery. I think it has small, purple flowers, but
I'm not sure. I'd like to know what this plant is.

Is the comment sufficient answer?

Hi there,

Thanks for your comment, but the the flowers were not geraniums. I
have smelled many varieties of scented geraniums and while they all
smell differently, they still have a common underscent (?) (due to the
geranium itself). These flowers definitely did not have that
underscent. They were very sweet smelling, similary to a cake baking.

Was that bakery smell the smell of fresh baked chocolate goodies?

Hi there,

Sorry for the delay in answering. To the best of my recollection, the
flowers did not have a distinctive chocolate smell.

I think the flower you are looking for is Bulbophyllum lasiochillum,
an orchid family member. The flowers are dark maroon and the scent is
like buttered bread. If this is the flower, please let me know if
this is it and I will clarify and reference.

ret-ga,

The flower you are looking for is from the orchid family, in the
Bulbophyllum genus. This particular species is the Bulbophyllum
lasiochillum. You can see a photo of the bloom here:

and here: http://www.geocities.com/RainForest/Canopy/2287/1b_e.htm

It has the scent of bread and butter.

Thank you for your question. If you need any further clarification,
please let me know.

Hi,

Perhaps this is the plant you're looking for.

There is a group of scented pelargoniums, often known as scented
geraniums which fragrances include various mints, rose, lemon,
almond, orange, nutmeg, strawberry, ginger, peach, camphor, and even
chocolate!

Variegated Nutmeg Geranium
This plant has small miniature leaves in light green and cream "hit
and miss" variegation. It's leaves are very small, velvety and they
really do smell like nutmeg.

Here they say the leaves smell like pizza, apple, lemon, peach, and
many more
