Some definition clarification may be warranted here. Strictly speaking "usenet" is a select set of NNTP newsgroups voted on and approved by usenet policy and administrators. This does not include "alt.*" groups or special purpose news servers, such as companies hosting their own support servers. NNTP use for non-usenet groups is still quite popular. Qualitatively I can tell you that non-binary usenet groups have been on a decline for half a degade now because of the unsolved signal to noise ratio problem. That and the popularity of the Web and web based discussion forums taking "market share" away from usenet. |
