All reseaerch and development institutions, but another question I
need answered would be institutions for micro and nanotechnology, but
that is probably a seperate and more difficult question to answer.

Marty --

There are about 2,200 colleges and universities in the U.S. alone,
many with R&D operations in different disciplines.

Actually focusing on a narrow area, say nanotechnology, is more likely
to produce a useful source for this information.

Best regards,

OK, then I guess my question is really how many world-wide
microtechnology institutions (including nanotechnology) are there?

Hi martymarr-ga. We really would like to help you but we again need to
clarify some issues first. Since some institutions come and go, we do
not have any definite way of knowing how many they are or be able to
provide a complete list of such organizations.

What number of institutions for nanotechnology R&D would be considered
as a legitimate answer in this case? Just let me know. :)

I think there could be as many as 600 worldwide institutions
considered to be doing R&D including universities, federal, and
industrial labs. I need a seconday source to verify a number.
