klepa, I recently went through a similar search, and found my best
option appeared to be a VCD version. Would you be interested to links
to VCDs?

Okay, here you go,

A Ring / Ring 2 DVD set has recently cropped up on eBay. The DVDs are
transfers of the original PAL versions, and picture quality is said to
be somewhat "squished" but otherwise high. Format is Region O / NTSC.
See..

A VHS NTSC version is at auction on eBay too...

There's a variety of other "Ring" DVD offers on eBay, most claiming to
be NTSC and English-subtitled. Caveat Emptor and all that. I'd pick
someone with a high rating. See...

...which will also bring up some unrelated stuff, but mostly "Ring"
DVD auctions.

ZoomMovie offers the English sub-titled version on VCD for $8.99 in
NTSC:

Eureka Movies offers it for $7.97 on VCd, although it's currently on
2-week backorder

In 1998, Ringu (aka Ringu) won awards at international film festivals
in Brussels, Montreal, and Pusan before U.S. remake rights were
snatched up by the DreamWorks production company. Its American remake
began playing nationwide on October 18th.

Earlier this year, videotapes were available that claimed to be the
movie version of The Ring, but (alas!) were, in actuality, copies of a
much earlier Japanese TV version. As of 24 October, 2002, rumors were
that original Japanese Ring will be made available in the US on DVD
some time next year. No word yet on when next year, but this is some
welcome news indeed for American fans.

Amazon (UK) has a listing for Ringu:

This 1998 version is on DVD, and is subtitled.

Ring 2 and Ring 0 are also available from the same seller.

I hope this helps!

i don't know how reliable <i>e_coli-ga</i>'s comment is regarding the
availability of "ringu" on DVD since it is readily available in the US
from facets but without the english subtitles: http://www.facets.org

where did you hear this "rumor" exactly?

Also, the Japanese TV series of "ringu" came out about two years after
the movie release.
