I'm looking for a computer software that can transform a person's drawing into a particular art style. For instance if I drew a fish and I want to see how Picasso would have done it in a Cubist style, the software will use my drawing as a base and then metamorphose it into a Cubist drawing. Can anybody tell me whether such software exists? And if it does, how or where can I purchase it from? |

Dear Goyle The answer to this question is not simple. If you want to do serious work with computer-generated graphics, there is a lifetime of study and work ahead. The best software is very costly, and the same goes for the hardware you need. And the software takes very, very long to master. That said, I will try my best to point you in the right directions. << I'm looking for a computer software that can transform a person's drawing into a particular art style. All the software mentioned in the comments are software that will take a drawing, shift the pixels slightly, maybe smudge them, add textures etc. An example: If you scan a drawing you have made of a house, and import that into a graphics package, then there is no software in the world that can show what the back side of that house looks like. But if you just want to soften the colors, tone them, wash them, or maybe add textures of paper, or canvas, wood etc, then most any Graphics Package will do the job. Personally I use Photoshop for such work. Open photoshop, import (or scan) you graphics, and then look under Filter --> Artistic --> There you will find several filters that can simulate Watercolors, Fresco etc. (Photoshop is available from http://www.adobe.com - or most any software store in the world.) But this software can only simulate, not create. If you want to create images and work with perspectives like an artist would, then you need a 3D package. There are many 3D programs, some simple, some complex, and some of them very expensive. If you are a student, you will get student discounts for the professional ones, like Maya and 3D Studio Max. Here are their respective homepages: http://www.aliaswavefront.com http://www.discreet.com If you are serious about this question, and you plan to use both time and resources on it, then one of the most rewarding aspects of working with computers is 3D graphics. (You have to remember that this software is the same stuff they use to make Hollywood blockbusters like Jurrasic Park, Monsters Inc. etc.) There have been developed techniques like Toon Shading, which techniques that are very close to your question: how to recreate artistic styles, working with textures, watercolor filters - and since it is 3D, it includes working with perspectives. Good luck! |

Have you looked at Painter 7.0? I haven't seen a working version of this software since version 4, but it had some of the features you're looking for. You have to put up with a Flash module on the website but it is: http://www.procreate.com/product/painter7/ Good luck and hope that helps. |

I'm not quite sure if you know what cubism really is, cubism is showing an object from multiple perspectives, it's not simply drawing everything as a cubes, but if what you want is a program that will make something you drew into cubes there is a program called "the gimp" its a free open-source program, you can download it at www.gimp.org |

Art Ideas http://www.greece.k12.ny.us/taylor/topics/artideas.htm "Use a program like Print Shop or Paint Shop to enhance scanned student-work. Drawings and paintings in the student's own style can be transformed into Impressionist, Pointillist or Cubist works. Some programs simulate a variety of media - crayon, watercolor, oils, etc." You can download free trial/demo versions of such image-manipulation software at the following sites: Paint Shop Pro (PC) http://www.jasc.com/download_4.asp Print Shop Deluxe 6.0 (PC) http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,5323,00.asp See also -- Adobe, including Photoshop (PC and Mac) http://www.adobe.com/products/tryadobe/main.jhtml#product=39 Another such program is CorelDRAW's "Art Strokes Effects" which "turn your images into drawings, paintings, watercolors, etc. Some of the effects include Charcoal, Crayon, Cubist and much more." Corel makes the Painter 7.0 program (mentioned by vir-ga) so no doubt the effects would be similar. Here's a tutorial on Applying the Cubist Effect, to give you an idea of how it might work: http://howto.lycos.com/lycos/step/1,,10+57+36407+36573+36578,00.html I've not had much luck with a free trial download for Corel products except for patches and updates, however. Finally, here's a shareware program for transforming photographs (not artwork) that might interest you: Professor Franklin's Instant Photo Artist 1.04 http://tucows.com/mmedia/preview/282436.html Evaluation: 30 days ($29.95 to keep) "This amazing and innovative program lets you take ordinary photos and turn them into works of art. Whether you prefer Impressionist paintings, charcoal sketches or watercolors, this software can help. Just select a photo, choose your style and painting implement and drag your mouse over the outline of your photo. You determine the size, direction, style and pressure of your mouse-strokes. Select from a gallery of painting styles or choose a tool and brush shape to create your own." |
