Hello dtr
After searching with a fine tooth comb and finding nothing in the news
about either recent or proposed redundancies at Ashbourne
Pharmaceuticals Limited, I rang their head office on +44 (0)1604 882
190 and the person I spoke to either genuinely didn't know what I was
talking about or wasn't prepared to say anything about it.
If the redundancies had been announced on a press release or were
common knowledge, there would have been no reason to deny the same, so
this led me to look in other areas since it is possible that company
you had heard about was in fact another company other than Ashbourne
Pharmaceuticals.
Another reason that I do not think that Ashbourne are the company that
had to make redundancies is that this would have been very relevant
local news as most of those made redundant would have been residents
of the areas and obviously it would affect both them and their
families. Therefore, I searched the archives of all of the local
papers at northantsnews.com and there is no reports of any
redundancies made at Ashbourne Pharmaceuticals Limited.

The company that was recently reported as making redundancies was
actually
GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) who made 400 workers redundant recently and this
was announced on 26 September 2002. They put this down to "defending
against competition and securing it's future.
BBC News

This was actually hinted at in a speech given at the Chemicals &
Pharmaceuticals National industrial conference on the 13 June 2002 at
which Ashbourne Pharmaceuticals would have been in attendance.

You have obviously gone to a lot of trouble over this one , however ,
the answer doesnt help me much . Ashbourne is definately the right
company . Although all employees are employed by Ashbourne there is a
holding company called Broomco ( 1714 ) Limited it is just possible
the redundancies were incorrectly assigned to them .

After a few more telephone calls, i have established that the local
newspaper that would cover that particular area is The Northampton
Chronicle.
I have spoken with Jan the librarian in the records department and she
cannot recall anything off the top of her head regarding what you are
looking for but she will do a search of the records for me, bless her.
I will let you know as soon as she rings me back with further
information.
Regards

After some more digging, Dr Martens factory was closed as the firm
relocated to china, which meant hundreds of redundancies for the area
and also Avon Cosmetics, who have connections with the pharmaceutical
industry shed 450 jobs in April. I have handpicked through all the
archives related to business and/or redundancies for every local paper
in the area and there is no record of any major or minor redundancy
announcements.
I am still waiting for the librarian to come back to me.
In the meantime, where did you hear about this in the first instance
and how recently do you suspect this happened?

Jan, the Librarian from the chronicle just rang me back, her number is
0044 (0)1604 467 042.
She has searched all her records and also asked the editor and
assistant editor and none of them are able to find or recollect any
redundancy announcements from Ashbourne Pharmaceuticals.
This is becoming a mystery as surely the loss of a significant number
of jobs from a large firm in a small village would have warranted a
story even if it was only a by-line.
Have you any further information as per the above?
