I have 4 BetaSP videotapes that I would like to log and create frame
acurate EDLs with on My Final Cut Pro (Mac DV editing software)
system. The only problem is that I don't have a BetaSP deck and all
the related gear to get the footage onto my Mac with perfect timecode.
I use mini DV for everytime. Is there I place I can send the BetaSP
tapes to get converted to miniDV and have them maintain the timecode.
MiniDV has it's own wierd timecode that travels over the DV cable.
It has always worked great for me in the past, even in edits where
frames count. I could not find a video dup business place locally
that had a DV desk that could slave to external timecode. Maybe I
could FedEx the tapes somewhere?

Hi sherpaj,

I want to understand you right...
You want to dump the Beta footage on a MiniDV purely so that you can
digitize the footage from the MiniDV through your camera/ DV deck to
FCP. Your problem is how will you make the EDL from your MiniDV copy
help cut the Beta (like an online edit leading to a final cut which
will be printed back to Beta).

If this is what you want to do, I can think of one way. Basically if
you get a good professional transfer from BetaSP to MiniDV, the
quality of the output form the MiniDV will be comparable to BetaSP
quality. So you will not have to really use the EDL to cut the Beta.
Your final cut can print back to MiniDV.

Your final distribution media can be anything - Beta, DV, VHS, etc.

I have personally seen very good work done this way.

Do let me know what you think. I realize there is only an hour before
your question expires.

Warm regards

If anybody can take care of this for you it'd be Allied Vaugh (Allied
Digital Technologies). They have locations throughout the country,
though you might probably still have to ship your tapes to them if you
don't happen to live in one of the places they have a presence.
However, they're set up to handle that and are very efficient, as well
as fairly priced. I used them as a resource for over ten years for
similar jobs and never had a bad experience. But since I haven't
actually verified your request with them, I'll post this as a comment
instead of an answer. Though, if it should work out for you, I'll be
most happy to claim the fee. :-)

Here's their main website:
http://www.alliedvaughn.com

And here's the page for contact information for their various
facilities:

Best of luck,

I tried Allied Vaugh, they couldn't help me. I realy need to do the
EDL in Final cut. For this project, it cannot be done in the DV
format.
