go2shh, I called BMW of North America, and the representative stated that any information they might have on this would be for internal corporate use only. Surprisingly, the BMW Car Club of America said that they would have no information for this either. I spoke with a BMW dealer who has been selling BMWs since 1983. He had never heard of a "legal edition" M6, but he speculated that this car would have had the windshield, headlights, exhaust, and other elements replaced in order to comply with US automobile standards so that it could be imported legally for sale in the US (rather than being brought here from Europe by an owner who did not get the required US modifications); thus, the designation "legal edition". He checked his online computer system, but said that he could not find any information on the number of vehicles that were actual modified and imported in this way. I regret that I cannot provide you with more conclusive information. Good Luck! aceresearcher |

That dealer should have their franchise taken away by BMW. In 1987 and 1988 US legal not " grey market " BMW M6's were imported into the US. It was a US edition sold only for 2 years. My car was bought at and serviced at Hallmark BMW Toyota in Florence MIss. for 14 years. The weekly Automotice News may be of more help I think the number is 1790 for the 2 year period. Automotive News or the BMWCCA would know. SHH. |

THESE CARS WERE SOLD LEGALLY IN THE US THROUGH 1988; THE LAST ONE'S WERE 1988; LEGAL MEANS NOT GREY MARKET; THE LEGAL CARS WERE SPEC'ED FOR US EMISSIONS ETC. I bought one in 1988 and my son owns it now; great cars. I think they imported about 1200 per year; the numbers should not be that hard to find; call Cunningham BMW in El Cajon California; they probably know. Also there were many road tests in that time frame which would tell you the number built. The M newsleter was out for a long time too; and they would know. The engines were hand built and many were modified and look like crap; ours is very stock although we did put on wheels from a 750 to get to a better tire than the metric tire, a TRX, which was always in short supply and a crappy tire to boot. Let me know what you find out. HOUTSLAW@AOL.COM |

Yes it does have a US legal 17 digit VIN number. If you use Google and type in BMW M6 there is a person who owns a 1987 BMW M6 show winner that says there were 1600 for the two year period. SHH. |
