Dear scout5,

First of all, may I say that I appreaciate your career choice. The
choice of working for a non profit is different than working for a
"stable" place of work - new things change in this field, and new
openings - or, alas, also short-cuts - happen at a rapid paste.
According to a page by Ohio State University
<http://fisher.osu.edu/fin/nonprofit.htm>, in order to be successful
in this field, you have to have very good people skills; very high
sales and communication skills (incl. being able to present), to be
able to solve problems quick and to analyse them; to be creative,
initiative, and to have leadership capabilities.

There are several good resources to find job in the Non Profit sector:

"Access Jobs" specialises in placement in Non Profit organisations.
You can find help at their website (with listing of over 50 jobs in
the DC metro area, including many in education and faith-based ones,
<http://www.accessjobs.org/jobs.html>), or at this address:
ACCESS: Networking in the Public Interest
1001 Connecticut Ave., NW Suite 838 Washington, DC 20036
Phone: (800) 417-6351
Fax: (202) 785-4212
Email: accesscntr@aol.com

Dot Org Jobs <http://www.dotorgjobs.com/rt/dojhome/find?main.view=cowjobs.list>,
found 56 listings for Non Profit jobs. However, the site also includes
other branches of philantropy. It should be mentioned that the site
also contains very helpful advices on getting a job in non-profit
organisations.

The "Community Career Centre" <http://www.nonprofitjobs.org/>
currently offers 22 posts in the DC area.

The "Non Profit Career Network" <http://www.nonprofitcareer.com/>
lists 20 posts in the DC. The Non Profit Career Network also contains
information about organisations, which means you could contact some
organisations yourself (there are many in the DC area); as well as
information on job fairs, conferences, workshops and conventions.

"Opportunity Knocks" <http://www.opportunitynocs.org/index.jsp> offers
6 posts in the region <see

Church Staffing <http://www.churchstaffing.com/searchopening.shtml>
offers only Christian-based jobs, and right now has no offerings for
the DC area, but is worth a visit.

Non-Profit Jobs.org is a modest site, which offers mainly executive
openings, but worth a try: http://www.nonprofit-jobs.org/

Except for advices, Ohio State's page also contains good resources to
look for more jobs: http://fisher.osu.edu/fin/nonprofit.htm

Craig's List also contains some listings, ordered by date (as they are
all from the DC): http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/npo/

Google's Directory also contains sites, in which you can search for
jobs: http://directory.google.com/Top/Society/Organizations/Nonprofit_Resources/Employment/Job_Search/?il=1

"Getting a Job in Charity" -
<http://political.lifetips.com/PPF/scid/60664/TipSC.asp>
Even better advices are available at Idealist.org
<http://www.idealist.org/index.html>.

I hope that helped. Please let me know if you need any clarifications
on my answer . I'd be please to clarify my answer before you rate it.
Have a good luck finding the right job!

Hmm... the Google guys missed the best source for non-profits,
especially NYC and DC, Monday Developments published (you guessed it)
every Monday. This requires a paid subscription but well worth it for
a few months if you are really serious about finding the right job
that actually exists and not just a mandated posting for a position
already filled in-house or by someone with an H1 visa.
http://www.interaction.org/monday This is also available in hard copy
in many University libraries.
