A Windows 2000 partition of mine has been corrupted.
When I try to access the "Network and dial-up connections" tab in
Start\Settings I get the message: "The page cannot be displayed".
What I want to do is to access my local area connection that is
connected to my ehternet card and add the TCP/IP protocol to get onto
the net, but I can't do that now since I can't even access the icon
for the connection in the first place.
My ethernet card installed perfectly well, I only need to add TCP/IP.
In what ways can I remedy this? E.g. can I install TCP/IP in some
other way, access TCP/IP settings in some other way, access the local
area connection in some other way?
Perhaps a corrupt registry that is causing this error?
Could I perhaps launch the Local Area Connection "icon" in some other
way?
Also, for your information, I cannot access "Add/remove software" or
the device manager because of the corruption.

Onmitemm,
It sounds to me like you're probably going to have to end up
reinstalling the operating system in order to correct the problems you
are having - especially if you can't get to device manager or
add/remove programs.
However, if the network properties is the main thing you want to
access, try this:
Go to START --> SETTINGS --> TASKBAR & START MENU
Under Start Menu Settings (on the Advanced Tab) at the Bottom, Check
the box that says "Expand Network and Dial-Up Connections".
Save this setting by pressing OK. This will make your Network and and
Dial-Up Connections act like your Programs do from the start menu -
with icons that expand when you highlight the folder instead of the
folder having to be displayed. Once you can see the connections
expanded, you can right click on them and then click on properties to
adjust the TCP/IP settings.
Please see if this solves your problem. If so, I'll post it as the
official answer. If it doesn't work, as I said before, you system will
most likely need to be re-installed.
Good luck!

Omnitemm,
I was curious to know if either my solution or the comments made by
serpentx helped to solve your problem? I would like to officially
close out the question if so, otherwise please let me know and I'll be
happy to research other options. Thanks!

Ok, well your suggestion only provides another way of "linking" to the
same resource. I've been researching myself in the usenet groups and
in my registry there is indeed a network connection registered, but
there is also another entry that has to do with showing the network
and dial-up connection tab, that is corrupt in my non-working
registry. I haven't tried to change that yet as I have deadlines in my
studies coming up.
The reason I want to save the partition is that so much time has been
invested in building the environment I want with applications etc,
that I feel "naked" without it.
