Hello. A complete translation of "The Edict of Diocletian" appears in Volume 5 of the series "An Economic History of Ancient Rome" (Johns Hopkins Press, 1940) by Tenney Frank. Volume 5 (subtitled "Rome and Italy of the Empire") includes a complete English translation of "The Edict of Diocletian" as well as the original Latin and Greek texts. The translation begins on page 310 and runs through page 421. The translation, credited to Elsa Rose Grase, is very well organized. On each page, the original language appears in the top half and a complete English translation appears at the bottom. Of course, it's not possible for me to reproduce the entire translation here, but you should have no trouble locating "An Economic History of Ancient Rome" at a major university library near you. If you'd like to purchase a copy, abebooks.com shows a listing for the 1975 reprint edition: http://dogbert.abebooks.com/servlet/BookDetailsPL?bi=77339327 A complete original set of the books is offered by Antiqbook's: http://217.115.192.61/books/bookinfo.phtml?nr=54699015 As I indicated, though, this is a very popular text and you should have no trouble locating it at your nearest major university library. Here is the listing from the Library of Congress: http://catalog.loc.gov/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?v3=1&DB=local&CMD=010a+33017382&CNT=10+records+per+page Again, a complete English translation of "The Edict of Diocletian" appears beginning on page 310 of Volume 5 ("Rome and Italy of the empire") of Tenney Frank's "An Economic History of Ancient Rome." search strategy: library catalogs, roman economic history I hope this helps. | |

The text is not yet available in English. I did NOT believe that this was possible, as I distinctly remembered reading it in some of my undergrad history classes. So, I began to pore through my history texts and found that we only read the PREAMBLE, which is EASILY found online--http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/ancient/diocletian-control.html Alas, my memory had failed me! So, I researched and researched and discovered that Liverpool University Press is currently working on an English translation, but makes no mention of when it will be available. You can find this referenced here: http://www.liverpool-unipress.co.uk/TTH.htm If you find this to be a sufficient answer, I can just post it as an answer at your request! Thanks! ali |
