I'm looking for the name and artist of a song which is regularly
played in the hit Australian TV show "Neighbours". The song is by a
female artist and the only lyrics i know are..

"now the pain has set in, where do we go now my friend?"

The TV company who make the show are called Fremantle Mediaand the
main show site is Neighbours.com can't seem to get a response from
either of them. Been looking for over a year for this song now! Please
help!

Hi, jserafi!

The theme to Neighbours was written for the show by Jackie Trent and
Tony Hatch, and is called "Neighbours." It was originally sung by
Barry Crocker, and one source says that it was later sung by Greg
Hind. There have been several different versions of the theme
throughout the years, but none that I could find have the exact lyrics
that you posted. Are you sure that you are hearing them correctly?
So far, I have been unable to find a reference to a female artist who
sings this song. Can you tell me for how long she has been singing it
(e.g., just the 2002 season)?

Here are some of my sources:

Several different versions of the theme (This is the only place I
could find Greg Hind's name mentioned -- the RealAudio links are
broken):

I think I know the song you mean; is it the one that often plays in
the background in the coffee shop etc... rather than the main Tv
theme?

Hi....

yes, i DO NOT want the Neighbours Theme tune!!! I can get that
anywhere!!

I am indeed looking for the name of the song which is played in the
coffee shop from time to time and is also played on sad
occasions...like Madge's death scene.

I do not have all the lyrics...but here are some:

"now the pain has set in, where do we go now my friend?"

"now the pain has set in, what now my friend?"

the song is sung by a female artist and contains a folky drum/piano
style of playing!

Hope this helps - i REALLY need to find this song!!! AAARGGHHH!

Hi,
I’ve been trying to track this down for you and it’s proving
difficult! I think the song is called ‘What now my friend?’, but I
still need to confirm this.
I’m still trying to find out the artist; suggestions on newsgroups are
pointing towards Tori Amos – does that ring any bells?
I will let you know if/when I can confirm any of the above,
Regards,
Ali

Hi England_ali!

Thanks for all your help in this. much appreciated. So you think the
song maybe called "what now my friend?". That IS a possibility i
suppose. However, one thing is sure - it is not by Tori Amos. This is
a song which is hardly known at all and the songs used in Neighbours
are never by mainstream public eye artists like Tori Amos. If it were
Tori Amos, surely somebody would have been able to tell me that by
now. No - this is definitely not Tori Amos. There is a chance it could
Felicity Hunter (whos is a rare Aussie singer) whose song "live thru
this" they have used on the show before. However, i have been on her
website and i don't think it is her.

I you can find out anything, it would be amazing..just to get the
song.

Thanks so much

Jamie

I have now obtained some MORE lyrics for the song i am so desperately
trying to seek....

"Now the cold has set in,
Where do we go now my friend?
And the pain has gone,
What now my friend?
Take the time to make a stand
And your fingers will burn
Maybe a small white lie
Your love will return
What now my friend?"

this song is played at sad times and in coffee shop scenes in the hit
Australian show "neighbours". It is NOT the theme tune!

If ANYBODY can help me find out it's title and artist i would be
forever in their debt!

Thanks

Jamie

I found this on the Festival Music website - perhaps it refers to the
song you're talking about? At any rate, I'll keep my ears open next
time Neighbours is on and see what I hear!

"Neighbours: Due to the number of songs heard in the show since it's
existence, it is nearly impossible to give listings of tracks played
throughout the shows. For this reason, we apologise but make it a firm
rule that we cannot take requests of this nature.

"One Good Reason": We've been absolutely inundated over the last
couple of months about a song titled "One Good Reason" as heard in
Neighbours. After much searching (and major head scratching), we have
discovered that this is an in-house Grundy's made track which isn't
commercially available. Grundy's, who make Neighbours, often have
their own songs that they use on a regular basis. "One Good Reason" is
one such track."

Hi jserafi-ga,
I thought I had a lead to your question but circumstances have meant I
wouldn't be able to answer your question before the expiry date.
According to the Australian online music shop, Sanity, a compilation
double CD of songs from Neighbours was released on 1st Nov. I followed
this up with Sanity and they followed it up with Sony. It appears that
they were a bit ambitious with the release date and I was told the
release of the CD, in Australia at least, will not be until early next
year. I was unable to obtain a track listing from either Sanity or
Sony but I suspect the song you are after will be on this compilation.

Good luck with your quest, I know what it is like trying to track down
a song. I heard a song in 1978 and have only just recently identified
the artist and the song.

Jserafi,
I do hope you get this info despite your question having expired. I
emailed Freemantle Media about this song and have only just received a
reply from Phil Bird the Creative Manager, which is detailed below:

'In answer to your question this song was written by Chris Pettifer,
who is
the Neighbours staff composer, specially for the show. He is also the
artist. Unfortunately I do not know the name of the singer.'

So, that answers part of the question for you. Please post a comment
if you wish me to see if I can find out anything more about it.

Kind regards,
Ali

YOU CAN GET NEIGHBOURS BACKGROUND TRACKS ON CD AND I AM PRETTY SURE
THE ONE YOU WANT IS ON IT.
THE CD IS CALLED 'NEIGHBOUTS: THE MUSIC" AND CAN BE ORDERED FROM
AMAZON.COM, OR OFF EBAY ETC.

HOPE THIS HELPS
