I'd like a citation from a respectable publication (or preferably
multiple citations) that document the fact that cold stress creates a
predisposition for alcohol consumption in order to feel warm.

Note: I do NOT need documentation of the fact that this predisposition is
misguided -- that alcohol creates an illusion of warmth through
expansion of blood vessels and increases heat loss.

Rather, I am interested in citations that connect cold stress to the
 (misguided) propensity to consume alcohol.

Something from a medical journal is highly preferred.

Dear jsn,

I have found several articles on the effects of ethanol
self-administration on ambiant temperature and vice versa in rats.
These are primarily in psychology research journals. Would this be
the sort of reference you are looking for?

There are no citations, since the basic premise is wrong. Alcoholics,
who live in cold areas, tend to die due to cold weather and consequent
hypothermia due, when they are intoxicated. Why? Because they don't
feel a thing.
